Loving that Psmith

I suppose it's only natural for fans of Jeeves and Bertie to check out Psmith as well. Right now I'm reading "Psmith, Journalist" and enjoying it immensely. Psmith has the gift for schemes and language just as Jeeves does, but he's as voluble as Bertie. Could this character almost be seen as a wonderful incarnation of the two, complete with the ( Read more... )

Psmith seems totally different to me. He's fruitier than Bertie but lacks that innocence, although he's a gallant sort of guy. I'd hate he be stuck listening to him and Jeeves talk because that would be a ten page passage saying "good morning " lol.

You're on the best Psmith book IMO.

Yeah, they'd probably try to outdo each other verbally. I can see Bertie just rolling his eyes at the pair of them.

I see Bertie with his eyes glazing over in boredom with his mouth hanging open.

That sounds great, I'm sure I'd love Psmith! I haven't read it yet (as you know, it is a bit of a problem getting all the books here) but our university library had Ukridge and I snagged it... and I liked it a lot!

(And my brother ordered another J&W book for me. It's waiting at my parents' place and I'm counting the days till Saturday!)

I think you would enjoy it. It's incredibly witty. There are some unfortunate social references, but the story was written in 1915. I don't think we can use today's sensibilities to judge older books.

But I do like Psmith's personality. Charming, witty and a little pompous, all at the same time.

I just had the equivalent of a cerebral implosion - If you somehow mixed the amazing Jeevesian genes with the Wooster's...Would someone like Psmith be the result?
*snirk*

I'm looking up the next Psmith book today/tonight and getting right on it.

I have to 100% agree = Wodehouse rules!

EDIT: And I see I'm so totally not the first to the mixology of Jeeves & Wooster resulting in Psmith. Aw, shucks. ;)

I think we are expert mixologists. I found that Psmith uses a lot of the same slang Bertie does, which I know is natural because he's of the same generation. I just find it cute when the both "leg it" somewhere.

I've got a lot of books I need to read, too. I buy them with the best of intentions, but....

You know, I was thinking about dipping my toes in the pool of Psmith...I think I might yet, but I have to train my brain to stop reading "Psmith" as "P-Smith", lol, it's driving me insane!

I did that throughout the book - said P-Smith. I don't know how I'll ever break the habit.
