Cooking - sort of

The kids and I are very taken with Middle Eastern food, but we can't afford to go out for it very often. So, tonight I tried to recreate one of the dishes we had at a restaurant we like ( Read more... )

I feel spoiled by my library. We have every kind of book imaginable. Hey, they had Raffles! But, yes, B&N is nothing but a disappointment. I only go if it's a new book I want to read that my library doesn't have just yet. (And then I read it in B&N if I can; I know, I'm bad.)

I really like Thai and Indian food. We only have one restaurant of each in our town, and it can be pricey to go there, even for lunch. Now that bottled sauces and such are available at the regular grocery stores (none of the specialty shops are on a bus line for some strange reason), I make the dishes at home myself.

Our local grocery store is quite lacking in the ethnic food department. It has a few things, such as Chinese and Japanese bottled sauces, but they're expensive.

I've ordered a ME cookbook from the library, one that says it uses a lot of ingredients the average Western household has on hand. I'm hoping that's true.

We've made Indian food. There's a wonderful Indian grocer in a town 45 minutes from here. We stocked up on spices and ghee so that we can make things when we want to.

Doing it oneself is the only way to go sometimes.

What sort of cookbooks do you have?

You know, LJ isn't emailing me replies. :(

At our library, there's oodles of Indian cookbooks as well as Chinese and Mexican. There's a good handful of middle eastern stuff, and some Jewish fare, too. Of course being in Scandinavian country, there's a bunch of Norwegian and Scandinavian cookbooks. Fargo has three universities and three colleges, so there are a lot of people from outside the US who come to study here, plus we have a growing population of refugees. We now have at least six specialty grocery shops in town. One is middle eastern, one is African, one is Bulgarian, two are Oceanic (which includes Japanese, Chinese, and Polynesian foods), and one is an organic store that has been here since 1970 which carries a little bit of everything.

I just picked up a few cookbooks from bookcloseouts.com, one of which is a British food cookbook. They had a special this month where selected books were 50% off.

That happened to me once. I contacted their help department and the situation was fixed in a few days. I don't know why it happens.

Your town sounds like a slice of culinary/literary heaven. I'd love to try African food.

Amazon is a dangerous place for cookbooks! I always find myself struggling to decide on one because I want them ALL.

It sure is. I found three ME cookbooks I'd like to try, but I forced myself to borrow from the library first.

I briefly checked that out. I like how it's organized.

Thanks!

It's a real pity sometimes that we live in different countries. There is one German publishing house that has amazing cookbooks. I have no idea if they have ever been translated... but try and look for the "Basic"-series by GU. (I just saw that at least British amazon does have them, but only in German. What a pity. Well, I could translate some recipes if you're interested. Just gimme a shout! :D)

I lol'd when I read you like Middle Eastern food, because I've only discovered that particular cuisine some time last year. There is an excellent Afghan reastaurant in the town where I studied. Unfortunately, I only managed to go there once... I also really love Turkish food, which is lucky, since I'm planning on spending a year or two in Istanbul when I finished my studies. Errr... yes. *rambling out* (Sorry!)
