Calling Tess

In his car and on the way back to the hospital from Robbie's offices, Brendan picked up his phone and punched the speed dial for Tess's phone without even looking at the key pad. He held the phone in his hand, activating the small speakerphone function in it and waited for her to either answer, or to get her voicemail. Her message, and Vic's ( Read more... )

Tess was trying, really trying, to cut back on the drink. As such, she was very antsy, and afraid of sinking into a terrible mire of depression if she didn't do something. Many cigarettes were smoked and much TV was watched. And it was all unsatisfying. She was beginning to realise she'd probably have to go back to work soon or completely lose her mind.

She was also waiting for Brendan's call with a mixture of anticipation and dread, mostly dread. She dreaded what he would tell her about Patrick; he didn't need more stress on top of everything else. And she dreaded what she had to tell him; he didn't need more stress on top of everything else. Maybe she shouldn't tell him now. It could wait since the danger was over anyway. Vic had taken her to the doctor and she had some tranquilizers, but she was studiously only taking the recommended dose, for now.

When her phone rang and she saw Brendan's number, she took a deep breath and answered. "Brendan. How's Patrick?"

"Hi, luv. He's going t' be OK, but won't be winning any tennis tournaments or beauty pagents for a while," Brendan answered, negotiating a corner with one hand, the other with the phone held awkwardly. "Seems some blokes took a fancy t' beating the crap outta someone and Patrick drew the lucky number."

"Shit," she said, stubbing out her cigarette. "Did they rob him or anything? They didn't shoot him, did they?"

ooc: I should note, this is before Liadan is assaulted.

"No, no robbery and no guns, thank Christ. He's had pins in his left arm, a few broken ribs and won't be moving without a lot of pain for a while. And'll be in for Christmas and his birthday, which happens t' be Christmas Day."

He stopped at a set of lights, sighing as he rubbed his eyes for a moment.
