(Fic) A matter of perspective - Chapter 3 of 3

Jun 09, 2014 15:32

Final chapter! This is in lieu of Monday's cartoon; normal service will be resumed on Thursday. Though to be honest, the next two 'History of Middle-earth - Chibi Version' cartoons will be re-telling the story of this fic in 800 x 600 cute chibi form anyway. I actually drew the cartoons first, and then decided to write the fic, if you're interested ( Read more... )

Ha Flameboy! You've met your match - at least for the next few centuries...

I really enjoyed this.

Thanks!

My aim in writing this was very much to explore the question, "What sort of woman would possibly want to marry Fëanor?", and equally, "What sort of woman would Fëanor fall in love with?"

Someone who was, if not quite his intellectual equal (because I don't think that's possible) but at least close enough to give him a run for his money, and shares his enthusiasm and passion for knowledge - and is also stubborn enough not to let herself be overawed by him.

I think it is fantastic! You did a really nice job of capturing that relationship. I have always believed that she had to have challenged him constantly both artistically and intellectually. One has to take the concept that Tolkien introduces beyond the "With her wisdom at first she restrained Fëanor when the fire of his heart burned too hot..." That almost makes her sound like a conservative influence. Their relationship would not have lasted nearly as long if it had been merely Nerdanel's bland judiciousness restraining Feanor's fiery imprudence.

I have a WIP that I need to get back to that deals with several aspects of their attachment to one another. I only have a couple of chapters left to write, but stupidly allowed other distractions to pull me away. I intend to finish it as my next project. Five Times That Nerdanel Said 'Yes'

Vivid and believable--I really enjoyed reading this. Thanks so much for sharing.

Thanks! Glad you liked it.

I did take inspiration from the description in 'Morgoth's Ring' that Nerdanel wasn't 'pretty' in the conventional sense - which led some of the (more shallow) Noldor to wonder why he married her - but she did have a keen intelligence and thirst for knowledge. Plus she was as stubborn as him, if less arrogant - and she was physically strong enough to bear seven children.

Loved the story. Nerd-girl and Flame-boy make a great couple. (Shame it won't last.)

Thanks!

And it does last several hundred years, which is more than most couples manage. :)

Nerd-girl

Which obviously is why she has that name...

Very nice. This is actually the first Tolkien fanfic I've ever read, believe it or not.

I hardly recognize the characters without the faux-Elizabethan speaking style. :-)

It's good to see somebody filling in the personal stuff that didn't make it into the Silmarillion.

It's the first Tolkien fanfic I've ever written, too! (Well, written to completion, and if you discount one joke-drabble I wrote for eowyn315 once.)

About halfway through writing this I realised the similarities between my characterisation of Nerdanel and early-seasons Willow Rosenberg.
