(Meta) Thoughts on Faith

This is a post about the Slayer from Boston, not musings on religion, just in case you were wondering. :-)  For some reason I've got into the habit of writing things, but never actually getting around to posting them, so this is partially an attempt to break that. Also, the story about Faith I wrote two or three weeks ago, 'Fair Exchange Is No Read more... )

I liked this story and am happy to see it got a commentary.

Actually, she's almost certainly left lots of fingerprints, but I don't think it would be realistic for Faith to think of that detail. Let's hope her prints aren't on file with the police yet.

You can tell you're not an American. If a city police department sent out a uniformed cop to take your report after a home robbery, you'd be lucky. It would not be remotely important enough for detectives and fingerprints.

Well, the police did indeed send someone round to take fingerprints after someone broke into my flat in London one time, so yeah... But wouldn't this be taken more seriously? It's not just a robbery, there's a man critically injured. Maybe even a charge of attempted murder - given that the police certainly aren't going to assume a 17-year old girl did that to him with one punch!

Glad you enjoyed it. :-)

I always enjoy reading your commentaries - of course your writing is so good the ideas come through anyway, but the thoughts behind it are always worth reading.

One thing that struck me:

It might even be that's why she in particular was Chosen rather than one of the other Potentials: because her life was in imminent danger.

I think it's pretty clear that Faith wasn't tracked down by the Watchers' Council until late in her life, and possibly even after she was Called

One could fanwank that these two are related - that the Council have a pretty good idea of the various potentials, but choose to focus on the ones that can be good Slayers (the Kendras and Kennedys, trained from early on) and hope that they get Chosen. The less than ideal ones (for their purposes) aren't approached or trained, but every once in a while, one of them will get Chosen, possibly as a result of being in the wrong place and company at the right time like Faith in this fic, and the Council gets caught unawares. Of course, it's mostly a moot point whether the " ( ... )

Hello I followed a link her from the su_herald. I've never seen ATS so I've missed out on a good chunk of Faith's character arc. I'm currently rewatching Buffy and I plan on starting ATS during Buffy season 4.

The thing that struck me about Faith was how badly all the adults in her life had failed her, from her parents up through the Watcher's council. I've also wondered if the Watchers knew about all the Potentials or only some of them. Buffy was in high school when they found her right? But Kendra was brought up as a potential slayer from childhood?

Hi! You know, I've often thought that Faith's appearance in S7 of 'Buffy' might have seemed a little odd to someone who never saw what happened to her on AtS... :-)

I've also wondered if the Watchers knew about all the Potentials or only some of them. Buffy was in high school when they found her right? But Kendra was brought up as a potential slayer from childhood? That's right; Buffy was 15 when she first met her Watcher (Merrick), but Kendra was too young to remember her parents. Also, Kennedy had a Watcher at least from the age of 8, when he taught her how to use a crossbow ( ... )
