This wasn't exactly the first time Castle had sent her a message of a foreboding nature that had merely amounted to some trouble in the kitchen, or a question about how to handle a situation with Alexis, or which shirt she thought he should wear to the next island party.

So, to her credit, Beckett didn't race to the kitchen, but she did appear with a mixed expression of curiosity and skepticism on her face, crossing her arms over her front and leaning in the doorway as she glanced at him without saying anything first.

"Trouble afoot?" she quoted, raising an eyebrow.

"I can't decide if I want chocolate or vanilla," he said very seriously, like he didn't just call her over from whatever she was doing to discuss cake flavors. "And considering the magnitude of the occasion, it has to be perfect."

"Chocolate or vanilla for - " Beckett prompted, and then her brain finally put two and two together and she nodded silently, recognition taking the place of confusion.

"Your birthday," she added, somewhat softly.

Castle shrugged, but he was hiding a delighted little smile. After all, it wasn't as though he expected a great deal from her. He only wanted her company. "Not only am I growing older, but I believe they call this one a milestone. I'm old. Very old."
