I love all variations of _The road goes ever on and on_. Including the music that the Tolkien Ensemble set it to (I'd search You Tube, but I'm lazy, sorry).
If Gandalf had left word that Bilbo was "out adventuring," they might have declared Bilbo incompetent (or whatever they call it in the Shire) and tried to sell his stuff anyway ;) .
