Sick Kitty, New Tech Toy

Sep 08, 2016 15:21

We have a sick kitty in our house. King is an elderly cat, and has long-term kidney disease, so he's fairly sedate most of the time already. Yesterday though, he was threw up his breakfast and hasn't eaten much since. Nathen is giving him chicken broth which he laps at occasionally. He disappeared for a while yesterday, and I spent twenty minutes ( Read more... )

*blink*

I am sitting close enough to a shelf of LPs that I can touch them. Mind you, I haven't played any of them in quite a while, but I do have a record player in the house. Wish I could lend you an LP to try your player with.

Thanks for the thought. *grins* I do have a smallish collection of records myself; they're just all up in Wisconsin right now. I may bring the whole box down next time I'm up. Half of them belong to Lisa, who I was digitizing them for. The combination of my other table having a slight speed wobble and having to pack everything up in Syracuse interrupted my efforts, but I should get back to it so I can get them all back to her, along with MP3s of them.

Cool turntable! I remember the timing dots from my own unit, but I never used one with linear tracking. Good luck with it!

Thanks! I do hope that once I have a record to play on it, that it turns out the problem really is resolved. If not, I might bring it by my uncle, who has a hobby of repairing pinball machines and jukeboxes and things like that. He did some work on my Marantz amp a while back and made it so much better!

Poor kitty.

Excellent turntable.

The kitty seemed a little better this evening, but is still hiding under the bench. I'm worried about him. I'll be taking him to the vet tomorrow for my housemate, who can't get away from work during the vet's appointment window.

I'm unreasonably excited about this turntable!

You find the best deals at thrift stores!

I hope King improves. It's painful to watch our critters suffering.

Oh, and my dear husband has one of those turntables in his shop, sitting on a shelf covered with dust.

My dad asks me how I manage to find some of the things I do. I can only say that it's because I go to thrift stores more frequently than may be healthy for me. *laughs*

Thanks for the well-wishes for King. I'll be taking him to the vet tomorrow for my housemate, who can't get away from work. Hopefully all will be well.

some of us become invested in our online kitty connections so do let us know how King is doing.

I will. And Nathan, King's person, appreciates the concern!

Remember these- thing is, they track the album the same way they get recorded- linear! I'd love to get hold of one!

I was only vaguely aware of linear trackers before I saw this one at the thrift store. I'm so excited to connect it to the amp here and put a record on it!

They make a lovely sound.

There we even the beginnings of laser trackers before CDs took over.

Sadly, my decent speakers and my Marantz amp are living in Wisconsin with my parents right now; there isn't room for them in condo Danae and I live in. The amp here does have an integrated phono preamp so I can use a turntable, but it's a relatively modern digital surround sound thing, and the speakers we have are a set of those little Bose cubes (hand-me-downs from a friend) and a subwoofer. Ok for movies, lacking something for music. Someday I'll have room to set up my hi-fi gear again....

I didn't realize how early folks were working on reading LPs with a laser! I just went and read a Wikipedia article about it; thanks for the pointer. I really love pieces of technology that represent the tail end of an era. So often, they're the biggest, best, most complex examples of the technology. They're sort of a crowning achievement. (That's part of why I like the really late steam locomotives like the UP Big Boy so much.) They were special, and we will not see their like again.
