Misogynist Memery

In response to a meme elsewhere: people actually say that women are lying to men by wearing makeup? People actually, seriously express that kind of absurd conflation of malformed thoughts with a straight face? This is why we need feminism.

meme, feminism

Then I guess men are lying when they suck in their guts when a woman passes by. Or wear elevator shoes. Or get hair plugs. Or Botox. Wait that last one could apply to anyone these days. Most of us do things to present ourselves in what we think is the best way, but calling it lying seems harsh.

So yeah, making that statement you described seems a bit sexist.

I seem to be more inclined to get angry at things like this lately. I'm not sure if it's high stress, or a medication effect, or some combination thereof. But yes, the sexism here is just so aggravating to me.

And just tonight, Facebook notified me of a comment that Lisa made to a post by "Sheldon Cooper" (I don't know if it's an official Facebook page for Big Bang Theory, but it kind of looks like it) with a caption something like: "These 19 photos are proof that you should never trust a woman wearing makeup." This must be a "thing" right now. Lisa wrote:

"And thank you so much for spreading this ridiculous and wretched form of sexism. First men demand that all women be perfectly beautiful, then they punish women for attempting to live up to that impossible ideal."

Arrgh!

Hamlet has a rant to Ophelia very much on those lines.

That's right; I hadn't even thought about that. That's the "Get thee to a nunnery" speech isn't it? How's it go? Something about painting an inch thick, not being a breeder of sinners... Wow. It's been a long time since I've read or seen that play. I think parts would feel very different now.

Ok, I Googled it. The lines about paining an inch thick are the skull scene. But yes, the Ophelia diatribe is pretty vicious.
