I'm fairly certain it's been broken. In several places. John was clearly wrong, as a sprain should not hurt this badly.

If I'm lucky, it's not displaced so badly as to cut off circulation. I'm not really in the mood to have my hand amputated.

John's an army surgeon, let's remember, I think it's best if you just take his word for it. You certainly won't need to get anything amputated.

A sprain absolutely can hurt that badly. Especially if you keep trying to use your hand. Put down the pencils. ;)
