Ali pauses at the mouth of the alley, thinking she's seen something out of the corner of her eye, then steps in to investigate. While her eyes adjust, she picks out what details she can: it's clearly a man, in boots, laying too still to be healthy...
She crouches down, reaching out to touch his shoulder. "Are you okay?"
*There's a long moment where she doesn't get any reponse at all. Then the muscles in the shoulder under her hand twitch. That, in case it wasn't immediately obvious, was his entire effort at getting up. He makes a low grunt of pain, no more than a hiss between his teeth*
*There will be no pulse. His skin is cold, the bedraggled strands of white hair sticky with blood and dirt clinging to his neck. He manages to turn his face to one side, seeking to see who it is, because the voice is familiar, surely...?
Old habits die hard. He's forgotten he can't see.*
Ali's gone rather a long while, several hours at least. When she does return, it's with a brace of rabbits, fluffy little things in cages and it's really best the kids at the pet store don't know what's going to happen to them.
*The passage of time has ceased to register with him. She could have been gone minutes or hours - he hasn't noticed. He hears her approach, but is barely strong enough to look up. The instinct inside him that detects soul presence is still working, though...*
*After a very long moment, he lurches more upright and snags one of the cages. The little creature inside thumps and skitters in alarm, eyes huge and staring as Cervantes drags it, cage and all, onto his lap. There's another pause while he seems to recover himself from such exertion. Then the hand that isn't crushed reaches out, fumbles for the cage catch, and shoves inside.
The little rabbit goes rigid in shock as it is grasped by the scruff. Cervantes' blind eyes briefly darken, red like new blood. The rabbit begins to scream, that terrible child-like shriek that only rabbits in the last stages of extremity can muster...and then silence. The furry body goes limp. So very quick, but not so very peaceful. The cage is shoved from the undead pirate's knees.*
