Picspam/Cara Recap: 2.19 Extinction
In which we see how far Cara has come. Mostly Cara with Cara/Kahlan as well because it's so canon.
Sorry this is a little later anticipated, RL rudely interrupted my picspamming. I've decided to split this ep and Eternity up because there are A LOT of pictures.
2.19 Extinction
FINALLY THERE’S A CARA/KAHLAN EPISODE. I was getting worried since Desecrated. So they’re on their way to the forest of the Night Wisps so they can read the scroll when Cara looks up and thinks it’s SNOWING and get’s so smiley it’s untrue AND THIS IS THE FIRST TIME WE’VE SEEN HER SMILE WHEN SHE’S NOT KILLING SOMETHING. It pretty much sets the feeeelings theme of this episode. Kahlan realises it’s ASH not snow and that Rahl is burning the Night Wisps’ Forest and get’s all kick ass and stabs the D’Harans to death a lot. Cara also seems really pissed off during the fight like YOU RUIN MY GIRLFRIEND’S FAVOURITE FOREST AND EXPECT TO LIVE? Rahl appears with THE LAST NIGHT WISP who is also conveniently WITH YOUNG (LOLOLOL). He wants the Scroll so he can save the world and stop the Keeper from killing him basically. Cara’s all WHATEVER, I’M SICK OF THIS NOW, KILL IT WE’LL FIND ANOTHER. And Rahl says, in a way that will become significant next week, JUST LIKE A MORD’SITH, NO SENTIMENTAL ATTACHMENT. So Richard gives Rahl the scroll and he reads it then burns it so he’s the only one who knows what it said and says he’ll help them to save the world. Richard, for some reason, does not trust him.
Cara and Kahlan split off to take the Night Wisp to some special Grotto of character development which is the only place it can give birth. But not before Kahlan and Richard have one of their kissing goodbyes and Cara interrupts them because she’s seen enough of these to last her a lifetime (really once was enough, that one time in Resurrection was one time too many) and ominously, RAHL NOTICES. Rahl spends five minutes with them and realises Cara’s weakness is women LOL. (Also Cara says YOU LOVE HER, SHE LOVES YOU, I LOVE HER, I SHOULD PROTECT HER AS IF SHE WERE YOU and that last one is her trying to hide behind her duty to the Lord Rahl again and does anyone else notice how now Darken is back he should be the Lord Rahl and Cara should be serving - idk by seniority or whatevs - but the thought never even enters Cara’s head? She hides behind her duty when it’s convenient but in truth she’s so far away from doing her duty that it’s nothing but empty words at this point.) Then, in a softer tone she says that they could be halfway there by the time they finish saying their goodbyes and this is really just to spare herself the pain of watching, but also if it means she never had to see their love again, she would run so fast. If it meant she never had to see them kissing again she would take the Night Wisp there in three seconds flat.
Rahl teases Richard about not being able to sleep with Kahlan and then suggests Richard let Cara come with them so he could sleep with her and get his frustrations out that way. When he starts talking about how Cara used to ~serve him Richard punches him in the... stomach? Balls? And I like Richard a lot here when he’s defending his best bro Cara. Considering Rahl noticed Cara’s feelings before, I almost feel like he intentionally misinterprets it here so as to throw the others off the scent of his brewing plan.
Anyway Kahlan has an entire conversation with her hand the Night Wisp in which she talks about love and babies and Richard while Cara gets more and more pissed off like AREN’T YOU GOING TO MENTION ME EVEN ONCE? SHUT UP ABOUT RICHARD. Cara does many glorious faces (and a little bit of her feelings face) while Kahlan explains that she has to keep talking to it to keep it alive until they get to the birthing ground. Cara looks sceptical all HOW DO YOU EVEN KNOW WHAT IT’S SAYING? And Kahlan just grins, like the supportive girlfriend she is because really this is just Cara being Cara, and says if Cara listened carefully she’d understand it. And this is a little bit about how only people with feelings can understand the Wisp and Cara rolls her eyes a lot because she knows that feelings are stupid.
Kahlan and Cara go through Gar Territory and crouch close together behind some trees holding hands and having eye!sex. Kahlan lures the gar away whilst looking extremely hot and Cara runs with the Wisp for the birthing grounds. Then because Kahlan was doing it earlier and she wants to help and there’s no one around to see her SHE TALKS TO THE WISP even though she doesn’t understand it.
This scene is made of so much win I can’t even begin to describe it. First, she’s all OMG I BET YOU WISH KAHLAN WERE HERE DON’T YOU, I DON’T KNOW WHY, I’M SO MUCH BETTER THAN KAHLAN AND STRONGER AND FASTER AND I SAVED YOU FROM THE GARS. Then the Wisp apparently admonishes her for boasting AND CARA UNDERSTANDS while the music swells and she GRINS and LAUGHS and orders Wisp to say something else which is apparently that Kahlan is close and despite her earlier boasting Cara is all WHERE? And runs off to find her. So basically what is happening here is OMG I’M SO MUCH BETTER THAN KAHLAN WE DON’T NEED HER AT ALL - *Wisp says Kahlan is close* - WHERE?
Kahlan is binding up her ankle because she twisted it when Cara finds her. Her eyes rake over her for a second to make sure she’s ok and then when the Wisp asks if Kahlan is OK Cara’s all sarcastic and SHE’LL LIVE. Kahlan grins like a loon when she realises Cara understands the Wisp and Cara’s like WHATEV IT WAS EASY WHEN IT STARTED SPEAKING CLEARLY. The look of pure love on Kahlan’s face is glorious. Kahlan can’t run so she tells Cara it’s up to her to get Wisp to the birthing ground before she dies.
Then Cara is arguing with Wisp about whether or not the others care for her. She doesn’t think so - OH CARA - they just value her because she’s effective. Richard only keeps her because he needs her and Kahlan puts up with her because of Richard AND THIS IS THE THING SHE’S SCARED OF THE MOST and what her Achilles heel has been doing to her all this time. She will never believe that her life is worth anything to anyone. Wisp says Cara is afraid to get close to them and loves them and that she’s afraid to say it. Cara says it isn’t true, but of course IT IS and it’s heartbreaking. Hilariously, Cara says, STOP ASKING IF I LOVE YOU NAGGING, YOU REMIND ME OF KAHLAN before admitting that she loves Richard - it’s Mord’Sith duty. (This is the safe thing to admit because it’s expected of her). Wisp presses the point about Zedd and Kahlan and of course Cara can’t admit to that and just brushes it aside all FINE I CARE FOR THEM TOO *feelings face* ...A LITTLE. And really this scene exists as set up for next week, right? But it’s also so telling (to me anyway) that she won’t say she loves Kahlan because that would be too many FEEEELINGS and not enough duty. She won’t allow herself to love Kahlan. Then Wisp starts to ~fade and Cara runs as fast as she can to the birthing ground, and now she’s running towards her feelings again and doing this so Kahlan won’t be disappointed in her.
So Cara finds the Grotto and it’s gorgeous and she smiles AGAIN. She thinks Wisp has died so she carefully puts her down on a leaf AND APOLOGISES FOR FAILING WITH TEARS IN HER EYES and it’s not clear if she’s apologising to the Wisp or to Kahlan but what is clear is that she’s having FEEEELINGS. Then Wisp has her babies and Cara stares at them all starry eyed AND NOW DO WE REMEMBER THAT SCENE IN TOUCHED ABOUT HOW NIGHT WISPS WOULD NEVER APPEAR FOR CARA BECAUSE SHE WAS EVIL? Kahlan is hobbling along on her own when Cara reaches down and offers her hand to help her climb up a bank AND ITS JUST LIKE THAT TIME IN THE CAVE IN MARKED only this time Kahlan’s face splits into a grin as she stares up at her girlfriend all DID YOU MAKE IT? Cara’s feelings face is on and she smiles AGAIN and the first thing out of her mouth is I WISH YOU COULD HAVE BEEN THERE and then her grin widens, IT WAS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL THING I HAVE EVER SEEN EXCEPT FOR YOU. Kahlan stares after her and she’s so in love with Cara you guys. I love that Cara wishes they’d seen it together, and openly admits to feelings. Kahlan is still the only one she would be this vulnerable in front of.

Ultimately this episode is supposed to show us how much Cara has been changed by Kahlan’s love travelling with them. She’s one of them now so completely and her feeeelings are spilling out all over the place. It makes what happens next week all the more heartbreaking.
