And it was all right

So i have been tracking everything i cook in 2008 so far. Everything? Yes, friends, everything! Everything that's cooked. Stuff that's just put together, like bowls of cereal, those don't make the cut ( Read more... )

Super simple if you use pre-made barbeque sauce! Pretty close to simple if you make your own! No time to post it right now (i've got a date... with the beach! The beach! in February!) but i'll come back and put it up later!

Okay, i'm still not posting the exact recipe... i was going to, but i can't find the cookbook. I think it might be under one of my piles of homework. :/

I thiiiiiiink the recipe is basically press the tofu for an hour or two to get the liquid out, marinate the tofu in the BBQ sauce of your choice for maybe an hour, then either put it all in a baking dish and bake at 400ish for 30 minutes turning once, or (my preferred method) broil it for about 7 minutes on each side. Mmmm. Broiled things.

If you broil it, you don't necessarily need to press the tofu first as long as it's firm tofu... if you bake it, you have to press it first or else the extra water will come out and mix with your barbeque sauce and it's just kinda weird.

Oh, wait, i left something obvious out here!

After you press the tofu, cut it up into smaller pieces, like triangles or squares. I usually get 8 triangles out of one 14 oz block of tofu.

Okay--let's talk about that cereal. Since you're a vegan (you're a vegan, right?), I would imagine you can't just eat some Smacks for breakfast (or the generic brand that comes in the bag that I prefer). Do they make cereal for vegans? I guess that would be something easier to find in California.

And would you mind telling me how much you spend on groceries? The truth is that I want to become at least a vegetarian and perhaps a vegan if I one day convince myself that I really can give up real cheese (my favorite food), but I am really poor and don't think I'll ever have the money to not buy generic cereals.

hey, i know you were asking nik but I thought I'd respond too. I'm a vegan and I eat cheapo cereals every morning. :) There are tons of options, you don't need to opt for the $4 a box granola with flax (although it certainly is better for your health!). In fact most generic things are cheap because they don't use animal products.

In short: you can do it! after you break the dairy habit, being vegan isn't hard at all. :)

The only dry cereal i actually like is Kashi Crunch, which is conveniently vegan to start with. (Oh, and i like Kashi Good Friends, too, but i haven't eaten it in a while and am not sure about the veganness ( ... )

quite impressive! I didn't know you were such a great cook.

I'm obsessed with veganaise too. It's so good. Sometimes I plan my meals by thinking of things I can put it on or in. I added it to my vegan mac and cheeze a couple days ago and veganaise made it much better.

Seriously, vegenaise is insanely good. I used to like nayonnaise, but it turns out i just didn't know how good vegan mayo could be.

More or less! I'm not really calling myself vegan yet because it's only been like two months and who knows if it'll stick. But, so far, so good... it's been surpriiiiisingly easy for me.

Lentils in the rice cooker: 1c dry lentils rinsed a time or two + 2.5c water, dump that stuff in the rice cooker, and let 'er rip. You can put in seasonings ahead, or use broth instead of water, and it should work too. Mmmm. Laaaazy.
