Plagerism in Breakfast Club fandom

Aug 31, 2014 06:45

I was contacted via PM on FF.net last night regarding a completed Breakfast Club fic located on Wattpad that is a direct copy of mine. I did register with Wattpad, but I am unable to see dates as to when this person updated the story versus my story. I don't know how to access comments or anything on Wattpad, but I see there is one comment to the ( Read more... )

Hi! I'll be the moderator for this. I have already done some quick checking and it looks like the Wattpad account has been deleted. It seems pretty open and shut, but if you can add any more info feel free to comment.

EDIT: I do have one request - could you perhaps provide me with larger images than the ones you've inserted into this post? If you can't use LJ hosting try a site called Imgur ( http://www.imgur.com ) which is quite user friendly for anonymous image hosting.

Sorry about that. It does in fact appear she deleted it. I left her a message after all in the main comments section.

This was her reply:
@apckrfan. i'll take it down but to be fair John and. Claire are not yours so no plagiarism is involved since it's not copyrighted by you. I've done researches on this

I hope these pictures are better:

I could also provide you the second PM the user who told me about this on FF.net sent me today, containing more details of her experience with another user name. It implies this person knows what they're doing (muted that user on Wattpad whereas I never had an account on Wattpad until I signed up for one today so they wouldn't have been able to do that to me presumably not knowing I'd find out). I don't want to post it here, though since it's a PM, but if you need it I could PM it to you or something. Let me know.

(Sorry for the additional note, but they PM'd me a second time later in the day and I figured I'd offer since it has another user name on there. Both accounts are gone, just btw.)

A LJ message to me is fine; if I need to make it part of my final writeup I'll redact all names.

Plagiarism and copyright are two different but related topics and the plagiarist is dead wrong. She cannot copy work someone else created and claim it as her own, period, end of discussion.

Although I have had little to do with Wattpad, I have found them more responsive to copyright and/or plagiarism than some sites.
