On December 7th, we received a report of possible plagiarism on fanfiction.net, regarding someone posting under the name of 1st_Duke_of_Derrignton possibly plagiarizing three stories by three separate authors. The original report can be viewed here.

Although the reported person had removed the stories by the time we received the report, hamrensel had ( Read more... )

Um, your dates are off in at least one place. Could you maybe switch to a date format which makes it clearer which number is which, 'cause like this I can't make heads or tales of them. (The whole affair seems to have happened in 2010 - and 2006, but I think that one's a mistake - so you could just mentioned the year once instead of repeating it.) I don't mean to nitpick, but I'm European and used to juggling two different date formats already, and neither of them corresponds with the US format. (Dates like 12/7 confuzzle me to no end; December 7th, or the 12th of July??)

I can understand you're confusion, and I did put 06 in one place instead of 2010. I will get that changed. Thank you.

'Adopting' a fic? Well, that's a new one.

Actually, it is not so new. We have had a handful of other cases in which the plagiarist claims to have written the original author for permission to continue a seemingly abandoned story. Usually they either get a denial, or receive no reply from the original author. They then go ahead and plagiarize the story and start adding their own content to continue on the story.

A new one to me then! LOL! It just sounds so benign! Instead of the predatory act that it is, seeing a popular story, assuming/hoping the author's gone, so you snatch it up and post it.

JMO, but your date formatting is standard for the US. I wouldn't think it should be that confusing.

I didn't steal the story! I just took it without permission! Nope, no stealing being done here!

So if I steal "adopt" someone's car and they don't specifically ask me to return it, that means I get to keep it? Cool!

I like the idea that you can tell real original works by the crap writing. Nice, incomprehensible denial, too.
