What Plagiarism Isn't

Greetings all. I'm spiralleds, one of the mods for this community. Things have been quiet lately, which I would like to think means a lull in plagiarism, but unfortunately is probably more so just a lull in being aware of it. We mods thought we'd take advantage of that calm, whatever its source and try something a different. A bit of proactive example of ( Read more... )

Thank you.

I was wondering if it would be all right to post a link to this space on the groups that I own, all fanfic groups? If not that's kewl too.

Feel free to have a link directing folks to us. That's great. The more fandom folks know about us, the more aware of the issue of plagiarism and who are plagiarists they will be.

Out of curiosity, which fandoms are you involved in?

I actually have a RL example of the hive mind effect. ::rolls her eyes::

Final project in one of my classes was to do a creative project on To Kill a Mockingbird. If you weren't feeling particularly creative, you could write a paper--open topic ( ... )

I ran across this with my own fic as well. I started working on my fic No Happily Ever After in December of 2003. Plot and outline done. I came across a fic by SpikesBabyBlues while I was judging, and it was exactly what you describe. The plot points were so close, that the ordinary person might conclude that one took from the other. It was actually pretty spooky. Both of us were writing current WIP's with the same themes, similar plot twists, and both based somewhat on personal experiences. Of course, I emailed her to let her know of the situation and neither of us felt anything fishy was up. But I always worry that one day, someone will think that it is more than mere coincidence. The big difference being that she finished her story eventually and I haven't! LOL

Stumbled across this, and found it very encouraging. It's good to see the lines drawn so clearly in such a murky area.

I had an odd one in my little corner of fandom. Not one, not two, but three of us had the same idea for an extremely unusual plot twist, at the same time and completely independently of each other.

Each time I went to post mine, another popped up! Given that there's no more than a dozen posters in our comm, and only about eight or so regular writers, the odds of that happening must be extraordinary.

I can give a similar example of this. In my fiction in the Stargate: Atlantis fandom, which is all at damagereport - I won't give a specific fic, because it applies to all of them - I write two secondary characters without canon first names.

I've dubbed them 'Jamie' Markham and 'Adam' Stackhouse. However, since then, virtually every fic in the Atlantis fandom lists their names as Jamie and Adam.

I guess you could call it plagiarism, but to me it's just an honour.
