Rorschach was having a nightmare. He stood there in a barren wasteland, surrounded by smoke. By fire. By death. All around him, innocents were suffering, choking to death, dying slowly and painfully. And not just anonymous people he had never met. Kitty Genovese. Blair Roche. Claire Benett. Daniel. People he had known before waking up on this ship. He tried to run towards them. All of them. To help them. To get them away. But everytime they tried, they had decayed down to a skeleton by the time he reached them.

"No," he said to himself, his normally dry monotone now drenched with pain and misery. He dropped to his knees and began punching the ground repeatedly in frustration. "NononononononononoNONONONONOOOOOOO!!!! RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRLL!!!!!!"

He was immediately snapped out of this by the chuckling of a male voice. He spun around only to see a tall blonde man wearing a purple business suit.

"VEIDT!!!" Rorschach growled, his voice twisted with pure contempt ( ... )

It was only as she crossed into the microcosm of Rorschach's dream, and caught sight of him through the smoke and dust, that she recognized whose it was. Instantly she had started toward him, picking up on his anguish and rage acutely, wanting to reach out, wanting to help. However, it was as though the ground moved beneath her with each step she took, and she found herself making no progress.

As such, a little piece of his nightmare became hers, as she was forced to watch impotently as the people crumbled away, as the arrogant Veidt taunted him... It was only as the red-haired woman--there was only one person it could be--took a swing at him, awakening bad memories and stirring a rage that she barely dared to acknowledge, that Polly found the will to make the ground still beneath her feet.

"STOP!!!The girl had flung out her hand at the sight of the little boy flying through the air. Almost before she'd realized she'd called it into existence, there was an airtight metal box roughly the size and shape of a coffin where Rorschach's ( ... )

The little boy opened his eyes. The first thing he saw was bright red hair. Screaming, he scrambled behind the outcropping of rocks.

"I'm sorry," the boy half screamed, half sobbed. "Please don't hurt me!"

Rather than follow him, Polly stopped a few feet from the outcropping. She knew from experience that when someone was afraid, the last thing they wanted to do was be chased. Instead, she knelt down where she was (trying to look as non-threatening as possible--not that that was very hard for her) and leaned over a bit, trying to peek around the edge of the rock.

"Don't worry, she can't get to you, now. Mr. Rorschach, do you recognize me...?"

Ukitake could not seem to locate Kyoraku Shunsui.

A Captain's meeting was about to be called into session - although for the life of him, Ukitake just couldn't seem to recall what time it was actually due to start - but all he knew for certain was that it was an important one, and that they would both be late if they didn't get there as soon as possible. He had a suspicion that Shunsui was probably asleep somewhere out of Lieutenant Ise's immediate line of stern judgement, but the question as to where continued to elude him ( ... )

Polly had been wandering through the old Council Building, when she noticed that the soaring, sweeping hallways were tapering down into something more modest. The crumbling, shining stone became, in a matter of mere steps... wood and paper...? And the bodies... no more scattered, still forms, staring off into space and waiting.

Now, she wasn't altogether certain of where she was. This was exceedingly peculiar, as she knew that there was no part of Calabi-Yau that even remotely resembled this, let alone any part of the Council Building. It was fascinating! Heartbeat quickening with anticipation, she picked up her pace, wondering where the strange hallway led...

Ah!

To a door, apparently! At least she thought that was what it was. It looked a bit like a more low-tech version of the ones on the Thor, meant to slide aside, rather than swing open ( ... )

On the other side of the door, a room over, Ukitake perked up at the sound of a tentative voice, breaking the heavy silence that had descended upon the barracks. It was rather familiar, but for some odd reason the source had no tangible reiatsu to speak of at all, which was very strange indeed - even the lowest-ranking seated officers in Sereitei had some trace of spiritual pressure on their person.

The voice had emerged from the door on his left. Not entirely sure who it was, but eager to find another living being in this largely unfamiliar place, Ukitake approached that one, footsteps almost soundless on the paneled wooden floor. Perhaps this person might know what was going on in here, and where everyone had gone...

"Ah...hello?" Equally tentative himself for some reason, he slid the door open about halfway, cautiously, just in case this person might actually be hostile...

Polly had smiled when the door had answered her and started to open. Then she realized that it wasn't the door at all, and she stared, confounded, at the person who was standing on the other side.

"Mr. Jushiro? What are you doing in Calabi-Yau?!?"

At her words--as if the place came at her call--there was a rush of air around her, blowing her hair into her eyes. When she looked around it was to find that the walls and ceiling on her side of the door had contorted and grown, taking on the guise of the Council Building's halls again.

She looked back at Ukitake, confusedly, and then a horrific realization hit. It made no sense for him to be here. He couldn't be. So, somehow, there was only one answer.

Terror and suspicion warring for dominance on her face, she took a few steps back. "You aren't really him, are you? You're one of them! You're trying to trick me again!"

Polly had been making her way through her mother's house--strange, how, even after the woman had gone still, and Polly had remade the fire-ravaged structure herself, she still thought of it as her mother's house. She had come down the great double stairway and was crossing to the library when she looked up and realized that... there was a different room through the door!

Even more startling was that she could see a figure inside, though the sudden harshness of the light made it difficult for her to focus enough to see who it was. Holding up a hand to try to shield her eyes, she approached the doorway.

It wasn't until she'd stepped over the threshold and glanced behind her to find a starkly blank surface, that she realized she'd somehow walked through a wall...

"Who's there?" she asked, squinting into the brightness.

Polly's eyes widened at that thought, the mind that had sent it having become as recognizable to her as her voice was to him. Even through the strange discordance that seemed to run all through it, she knew who it was. "Mr. Break?"

A shadow...

Looking around, she realized that the harsh and horrible light came from all around them, glaring out from the ceiling, the walls, blazing up out of the floor. The acrid stench of the place made her grimace and want to hold her breath. Of course he wanted a shadow... Of course he wanted out.

Atoms couldn't form shadows. But they could make things that cast them. She'd have to enclose them entirely. Reaching out--as blind as if it were pitch black, she edged her way over to where he sat, a hand finding his shoulder.

She tried to speak and found that she couldn't, either, now. She'd breathed too much of this air.

[Mr. Break. Can you stand?]This was dangerous. She wouldn't be able to manipulate the particles on sight, here. It was too bright... Closing her eyes against the awful light, she ( ... )
