[me, thinks Katsura ruefully, although he cuts in shortly]

Aa? It was you who wanted a meeting, Takasugi.

[he isn't surprised that Takasugi would brush fingers against that sore (he certainly hadn't shied away from it the first time), but that doesn't mean he likes it]

[still, his face remains impassive (a cool, calm sea to Gintoki's flickers of forest fire) as he clarifies]

And no, it is not about Tatsuma. I believe it is for the best that we all meet, also.

[finally perking at the white-haired samurai's outburst, he turns bandaged, smile-stretched cheek to Katsura]

Then you've a counsel to command. Greed holds the diplomat in charge, hm?

[Takasugi wonders just who's really pulling all the strings here (though, he has confidence in his suspicion)]

I should not think wishing to strengthen our ranks is greed. Nor is hearing out the concerns of old comrades, or establishing a peaceful coexistence.

[Katsura is no string puller -- his feelings are too evident for the transparency of puppeteer's threads]

Our ranks? Don't lump my goals in with yours. Or his, for that matter. My only concern is that he stays out of my way.

[the statement is broad because the sentiment is equally so; in Gintoki's mind, he's already given Takasugi a wide range of things a one-eyed snake could do that would justify lopping its head off. Takasugi was smart, smart enough to have probably already figured out that Gintoki's out of my way was synonymous with messing with things that I am willing to go out of my way to make in my way]

[and Takasugi unfolds talon-like fingers in an open gesture to Gintoki, as if to say who's the one being uncooperative here?]
