Bruce had been trolling around the library, getting back into the swing of things easily despite all that had happened in the past month. All things considered, he had experienced weirder, and that was no excuse to fall behind on his research.

He reached the end of one shelf and turned round the corner to look at the other side only to bump into a pile of books near one of the chairs, knocking them over. He bent down to grab the book and glanced at the covers. Interesting subjects- he wondered what she was planning.

"Doing some light reading?" he asked casually, holding the book he had picked up towards the girl.

"You find the cynics fast. Though whether the cynics are those who believe everything is gone for good or those who don't trust what they are told is debatable.

People will believe what they want to believe."

"Clearly," she said dryly.

"Who are the people you've met who don't believe it all and who do want to find a way back?"

"There are a few. We don't exactly hold club meetings."

He thought back. "The first person I spoke to about it recently tried to kill the entire ship, to put it in perspective."

"Well, they sound insane," she replied dismissively. "What could that have accomplished?"

"Apparently he was experimenting to extend his life. His experiments fed off people."

He spoke fairly coldly- he had been one of the experiments.

"You'll find them eventually. Just the sort of untrusting, paranoid kids you'd expect."

She raised an eyebrow. "I wouldn't call being logical paranoia."

He smiled slightly. "That doesn't mean the ones I've met aren't paranoid."

Azula resisted the urge to say that she wasn't paranoid; that there was nothing wrong with her.

"... Who was the person who was doing those experiments?"

"His name was Chouno, Chouno something. He's very sickly looking and pale, and has shown no regard for anyone but himself. If you happen to run across him, he'll ramble on and on about how he doesn't care about any of us, how we're all hypocrites, things like that. Should be easy to spot."

He left out that he was expected to die any day now. It was only fair to warn her about some of the dangers aboard the ship.

"I'm not afraid of him, or anyone else who would do me harm. I'm a soldier for my country, and I've fought in battle-- I've killed, and wouldn't hesitate to kill again if I needed to." She said this all very matter-of-factly.

"Sometimes it's not such a bad thing to have a little fear."

He debated internally over whether to comment on her soldier status- specifically her stance on killing.

"Let's hope you don't have to make a habit out of it," he said eventually, hiding any disapproval or doubt at his own words from his voice.

"A 'habit'? A good soldier is controlled and doesn't kill willy-nilly, and I intend to be a good soldier."

"I meant here. There's no war here."

At least, not at the moment. He felt it wasn't going to help his point to mention that.

"... No," she said. "There isn't." That didn't mean there wasn't any violence, though.
