There was something about books, perhaps their smell or presence, the limitless knowledge they promised within or simply the look and feel of them. Whatever it was Eiki enjoyed coming to the library from time to time. She was not a hoarder of books unlike the librarian Patchouli but she appreciated their place as she appreciated everything. Knowledge and the pursuit of it was admirable and a preferred trait in people, Eiki did not hold herself above this. So this day Eiki found herself looking over the shelves of the library ( ... )

Edgeworth looked up at the yama when she spoke, a wan spark of relief showing in his eyes as his gaze came to rest upon her. "Shiki. As a matter of fact, I took a day to rest upon the planet last week." Of course, 'rest' was relative in this case; he had merely opted to do simple work at a far more leisurely pace, walking Pess during the intervals when he wasn't actively doing said work. Nevertheless, it had helped him to relax until he was interrupted. "However, what has been truly wearying can only be resolved through more work, not less."

"That is an interesting thing to say. Most people would say less would help them when they are feeling overwhelmed, not more," she offers a smile. She can't help but think her own subordinate would do well to have at least a bit of similar thinking.

"It is the nature of the problem at hand," Edgeworth returned with a smirk and a shrug. "A failure of understanding will not resolve itself, and it is this lack of understanding that is trying. I cannot yet make enough sense of of this place for my own sanity, let alone to do my job here competently."

"Would it not be easier to simply accept what is without needing to understand it? Understanding can take years, a life time, many life times in fact. The pursuit of understanding is a huge life altering goal, it requires perseverance and dedication. Is it really necessarily to have understanding in order to have acceptance?" She couldn't help but feel a little sad. To be frustrated through lack of understanding, would it not make understanding more difficult?

A deep irritation surfaces at the suggestion of simple acceptance, one that Edgeworth doesn't bother to hide; there's even the tiniest twinge of betrayal in his eyes. "I do not intend to become a physicist, Shiki. However, I must come to a sufficient understanding to realize when I must ask for aid, as well as to make remotely accurate indictments to begin with. Blind faith is a fool's path -- not merely the fool who would blindly accept all that he hears, but the fool who believes himself infallible as well."

Edgeworth should know. He has been the latter fool.

"I never said blindly accept, but there is acceptance of a situation and growing to understand it and then refusal to accept and desperate reaching towards understanding. In many cases understanding comes only after acceptance. The path to Enlightenment is much the same," she was as patient as ever, not a hint of irritation. It was almost the way a person might deal with a learning child.

Edgeworth calms down slightly at this explanation. "Then you at the least are not saying precisely the same thing as so many others. Many here fail to question, and expect that same failure of myself. Indeed, the very need to know that the premises upon which logic can hang are sound and as they appear seems impossible for most to comprehend." He looks away in the middle of this last sentence, a last-minute attempt to hide how lonely that makes him feel.

"To not question a situation at all is mindless following and is as sinful as refusal to accept a truth," her tone became stern, though not overly so. It was more the tone of someone used to speaking with authority. "However, not accepting a situation because it does not adhere to ones logic is also not a proper method. Sometimes the only answer is to try and see it from the other side. Instead of trying to make a situation be defined by your own logic, try and see the logic of the situation in it's own way. Try and understand the place and method it comes from."

She places her books down on the side of the table before continuing.

"Is there anything in particular you are finding most difficult?"

"That is precisely why I have been researching not merely law as it is here, but alien cultures, the fleet's history, and more recently physics as it manifests and is understood here," Edgeworth replied in a nearly pleasant tone. "In a place so different from what I am accustomed to, clearly adaptation is vital."

Of course, on the other hand, what he was not researching was perhaps quite telling.

"Of these, the differences in physics are proving most difficult to grasp."

"Is understanding their culture so important to accepting the situation though? Would that not simply happen naturally over time as you become accustomed? No matter how you look at it this is a slow process and trying to rush it will do you no good," she paused a moment to consider his situation. Surly he was avoiding the thing he had the most trouble with. "And is understanding alien culture really the thing you need to accept, or is it the more fantastical aspects of the other refugees?"

"It is important to understanding the logic that they use," Edgeworth countered, waving a finger as he coolly made his case. "To attempt to operate without forewarning in that respect is to beg a thousand unnecessary misunderstandings. One tenet that I was taught which I still believe is that it is better to be prepared than not."

When Eiki brought up the subject that he was avoiding, however, his composure fractured and he recoiled, an unspoken curse ringing loudly in his mind. "Um..."

She sighed, that was the real problem alright.

"Though I commend you for your effort it really is just a front for your avoidance. Knowing the basic rules of the ship works well enough for dealing with the aliens, anything more than that will have to come from gradual understanding as it is with all cultures. Knowing basics in the beginning is perfectly fine. However," and this was when her tone tipped down. "as a refugee you must come to accept the other refugees before you exclusivity focus on the alien population. Since I can see you are having a hard time with this concept I will offer help."

Edgeworth crossed his arms defensively as Shiki spoke, glowering down his nose at the yama. "I beg your pardon, Shiki. It is not a mere front. Simply because it is not what you believe that I should be focusing on first does not mean that it lacks value. In addition, it is not only the alien population, but the ship itself, any potential approaches to fraud, and any potential sources of superstitious beliefs that I am attempting to prepare myself for. I have also, at your behest, attempted to humor my fellow refugees long enough to attempt to learn something of the truth behind their claims, but few seem willing to do more than insist that I resort to blind faith."

"I did not say it lacked value, but a value that would do better after considering your immediate surroundings. The ship is divided, you are more likely to interact with fellow refugees than you would the aliens anyway." His glowering did nothing, in fact she hardly noticed. "What situations have you run into where they would not explain? I am more than willing to attempt to explain the things that I know and understand myself, a well as answer any questions you can offer me as honestly and fully as possible."
