I think they ran Happy Endings out of sequence - those must have been old episodes. Dave & Alex being good friends makes more sense now.

Yeah, that's always a mistake imo (see: Firefly) but fortunately I'm invested enough in the show and characters to put the pieces together on my own. I'm really enjoying that show.
