Let's talk about stock photography.

From the stock photography article at Wikipedia:

Stock photography is the supply of photographs licensed for specific uses. It is used to fulfill the needs of creative assignments instead of hiring a photographer. Today, stock images can be presented in searchable online databases. They can be purchased and ( Read more... )

I'm personally concern by something you said. I sometimes post on my LJ batch of lingerie and send warnings on stock icon comms. Is it considered stock or fashion?

Fashion is a grey area. If I look at stockicon, I generally make a difference between fashion shoots like those at ru_glamour and more catalogue-like shoots, if that makes sense. I think that difference comes from the models used. Some models are celebrities or near-celebrities, so therefore not in line with the idea of stock. But that is my personal opinion, like I said, fashion is a grey area. As long as no-one has complained and the mods haven't deleted your post, I'd assume they're okay with it.

I agree. Fashion is a grey area. But I'm gonna assume you like me when I make lingerie icons you're focusing on the item of clothing or some feature of it (laces on a corset or the lace on a bra). Sometimes model's faces are in my fashion icons but my main goal is their clothing or pose and I'm not using supermodels. If I was then I'd label is as Heidi Klum or whoever. I'm sure that's what you are doing. There is alot of clothing related stock out there as well, I also try to use stock databases to find that, less instances of finding "name" models or fashion spreads.

Thanks!! Yeah, usually I focus on a part of the lingerie, like laces or the like. And I really don't know anything about supermodels and try not to put any known face on my icon ;-)) And you're right too, as long as mods didn't delete, I'm OK I guess :)

Thank you for this. I've seen whole posts of weheartit images called 'stock' where the icon maker did little more than crop the image. To me, using an overabundance of those images is sort of like cheating - the original photographer is the one who did the colouring, did the tweaking, etc. I still try to do most of my stock the old-school way of using an actual stock site, where most of the images are dull and need work on them.

Funny. I find that most of the time the pictures from Getty or Corbis need less work than those of weheartit. ^^

They might, I don't know. I don't use either of those sites anymore. ;)
