Kingsley was nervous. A date. What the fuck had possessed him to suggest he and Rita try going out on a date? That blond man-trap had him thoroughly wrapped around her red lacquered, little finger, and he was loving it. He was so hooked even the words 'blond man-trap' sounded like a crooned endearment in his mind now instead of a snarled insult.

Rita Skeeter and Kingsley Shacklebolt did not date. They fucked. They argued. They sometimes talked. They frequently teased. They occasionally met for a drink... usually as a prelude to teasing, followed closely by arguing and then fucking, or fucking then arguing. But a date for the sake of going out and enjoying each others company? They'd never done thatDating was... normal. Maybe too normal. At least for them. He wasn't convinced this could work. He only knew he wanted to try ( ... )

Kingsley quirked his brow in mimicry of hers and smiled also. "I could go to Xanadu. If you want. I don't mind giving those miriad of other gentleman at your beck and call a good luck at us together." Kingsley thought letting other blokes see just how big he was might not be so bad an idea. Of course he liked the idea of having her alone even more.

He laughed and the smile reached his eyes, "A pint-sized femme fatale. I never did stand a chance, did I?" It wasn't accusatory like it might have been even a few months ago; it was warm and rich with understanding and acceptance. "We played a game called Queenie. Rounders was pretty popular and Knock Him Down Donkey. There were a bunch. Most you can play with anything laying about in the street."

"They don't play jazz at Xanadu. Can't really hear yourself think. It's full of twenty-somethings who think they invented partying, but don't know the meaning of it. Going there is more of a spectator sport, I think."

She laughed. "God, I sound like Irma. And what makes you think I want to spend time beating off all the young girls who'd like to 'be bad' and get arrested by the Auror, hm?" She peered at him. "No, I think I'd like you to myself tonight."

When he really laughed and it went all the way to his eyes, it was quite possibly the most amazing thing Rita had ever seen. She'd seen him laugh before, of course, seen him easy and casual, but it had always been in bed, after sex. Or in the morning, usually also after sex. She hadn't known he could be that way otherwise.

"I don't suppose you did," she agreed with a smile. "What on earth was 'Queenie'?"
