Kingsley was nervous. A date. What the fuck had possessed him to suggest he and Rita try going out on a date? That blond man-trap had him thoroughly wrapped around her red lacquered, little finger, and he was loving it. He was so hooked even the words 'blond man-trap' sounded like a crooned endearment in his mind now instead of a snarled insult.

Rita Skeeter and Kingsley Shacklebolt did not date. They fucked. They argued. They sometimes talked. They frequently teased. They occasionally met for a drink... usually as a prelude to teasing, followed closely by arguing and then fucking, or fucking then arguing. But a date for the sake of going out and enjoying each others company? They'd never done thatDating was... normal. Maybe too normal. At least for them. He wasn't convinced this could work. He only knew he wanted to try ( ... )

Rita wished there was a button to turn her mind off.

All right, so there was, and she knew it, but that wasn't quite what she had in mind tonight.

Maybe not her whole mind, either - just the part that kept fretting about what happens if and how do I.

It frustrated her. She'd never been nervous or shy about going out with Ollivander, never wondered what she should do in X or Y situation with anyone else. Usually, she just went with what felt right, and she had no idea why she couldn't trust herself to do that this time.

She stopped the thinking when he knocked on the door. Stopped it hard, like slamming shut a water dam. She knew tendrils would seep through as the night wore on, but for now...

Rita opened the door. Merlin, he looked delicious in those robes ( ... )

Kingsley wasn't surprised to find her ready to leave. He was surprised to be invited in. So surprised it took him a moment to remember to respond to her greeting. By the time he regrouped she had moved off.

He took the opportuntity to glance about. The flat suited her. He actually liked it. He thought most men would. Of course that was followed by Kingsley wondering how many men had seen it and liked it. Ollivander, probably, what about others? Kingsley has never been here before. Rita always came to him. He had known where she lived. He just hadn't been willing to risk coming by unannounced. Even now that Rita sometimes dropped in on him, he hadn't been willing to risk the reverse. The possibility of rejection or that she might be entertaining someone else was too great a risk.

Returning his attention to his date for the evening -- Merlin, that felt odd -- he replied, "They're doing better than expected. Of course that isn't as well as I'd hoped. I think this group will be fine. The physical conditioning isn't a problem. It's the ( ... )

"Thankyou," Rita replied, in that way of hers that always managed to make it sound like I know.

Bag finally extricated, she turned to face him. "Eyes open, mouth shut is probably difficult for everyone, though I imagine it's a bit more of a liability when you're on Auror. They should all learn to be animagi. It rather solves that problem."

He looked a bit like he was practising his Auror training right now. Standing still, observing the place with subtle movements of the eyes and head, but not shifting on his feet like some people would. Rita closed the distance between them, wanting to rid him of just a little of that poise, and herself just a little of this tension. She touched his elbow, looked up at him.

"Apparating or walking?"

She didn't need a hello kiss, of course - not at all - but it didn't hurt to give him the opportunity.

He thought briefly of Susan. She was twenty-something, but wouldn't have liked Xanadu anymore than he would probably. Although she did like Bob Dylan, which was nearly as ear-splitting, just in a different way, to Kingsley.

Then looked closer at Rita.

Older than he, not younger. Different, yet she just fit. She never seemed to mind that he talked almost constantly while they fucked, and she could let the filthiest things roll of her tongue without batting an eye. When he started thinking too much when they were alone together, Rita took it as a personal mission to find a way to make him stop thinking altogether and just let go. The woman could make him snap him like nobody else had ever managed. Yet, as they began experimenting with other ways he could lose control, Kingsley discovered that she had the ability to tear him down so completely and thoroughly that days or even a week later after building himself back up in her arms, he'd still have a sense of that absolute calm he felt when he gave over to her willingly ( ... )

Rita chuckled, lifting her chin a little to expose her throat. "I think we've been playing that one for years."

Oh, she could see the heat in his eyes - tempered with something else, but certainly smouldering there, biding its time. She'd let him have her however he liked tonight, she thought - but then she supposed she would have to wait and see. It wasn't unheard of for her to change her mind.

"Were you good at it?" Rita asked. "Pretending, I mean. Or picking the guilty one?" She shook her head when he asked about other friends. "There were a few, probably - other local families, and such, but we were taught at home, and we weren't really allowed to play with the muggle children, just because of those magical outbursts kids sometimes have. I still did, sometimes, but I don't think you could call it friendship. I was the oddity - the one who didn't go to school with the rest of them - so it was a strange sort of interaction. Mum and Dad could always tell, too, because when I came back I were always talkin' like t'proper little ( ... )

Kingsley nearly growled when she tilted her head to show her throat. "Tryin' to tell me you're tired of it or that it's an oldie but a goodie?" He grinned, "What kind of Auror would I be if I tired of restraining the prisoner?"

He thought back, "Yeah. At the picking the party bit. I think it was some of the first magic I ever did. I could just look them each in the eye and know. I was so good at that the muggles used to claim Mum taught me voodoo. Little did they know..." Kingsley tapped his ear, "Think I might've heard a wee bit of that during another type of unguarded moment ( ... )

Rita smiled. "The latter. What kind of femme fatale would I be if I stopped enjoying the sight of men on their knees ( ... )
