Michael was taking the long way to the school when he came across Orla, leaning over the bridge and looking as if she was about two seconds away from throwing herself in. He made his way over to her and put his arm on her shoulder. "Come on, love, you can't have forgotten how cold this river is enough to throw yourself in on purpose," he teased.

"You okay, then?" he asked in all sincerity.

It was a sign of how weary she felt, that when Michael made his way over, she didn't flinch or stumble in surprise. She just looked at him a bit blankly. "The river isn't fast enough or deep enough to drown anyone deliberately. I'd have to weight myself down first." Her pragmatic response made the healer in her wince, but she just turned to look back at the water. It flowed on, in a never changing cycle, yet it was always new. She envied that.

She nodded absently at his question, barely even hearing it. What difference did it make if she was ok? She could still do her job. What did that say about her? She was an emotional icicle, thats what.

Michael was a bit shocked by her reply, and the blank look on her face made him nervous.

"You're not all right," he said in concern, and changed his mind about retrieving the book he'd left at school. "Come back to my place. You look like you could use a cup of tea." Or a stiff drink, more likely, he thought.

"Will you come, then?"

Orla wasn't so far gone she didn't notice the concern on Michael's face. She attempted to smile. "I've probably been worse. It'll be fine." Its what she had to keep telling herself. Believing otherwise wouldn't keep her treading water, as it were.

She nodded. Michael, for all his cheeky ways, was a nice man, and she needed a bit of nice right now. If only to placate her ego, which seemed to be screaming, notice me! She let him lead her to his place, her head still a bit foggy with all the pent up remembrances of the past year.
