Costume parties were not Hermione's forte. She hated dressing up so much that she'd never actually done so in the past. However, she and Roger were trying to spend more time together and less time working until all hours, so they'd decided to attend the masquerade at the community centre. She remembered a time a few months ago when Wednesday night had been 'their' night, and she wanted to get that tradition back ( ... )

Roger tugged at his tie. He'd not worn a tie in nearly a year, but this was Halloween, and the occasion called for being someone you weren't.

His hair was parted and combed back and he wore glasses to compliment his tweed jacket and stuffy brown corduroys. The tweed jacket that he never wore, but that he knew Hermione loved since that one time he'd worn it to teach his class at the centre on Wednesday nights. Well, this Wednesday there was no class. Strictly speaking.

He cleared his throat and looked over at Hermione as she took off her coat and they headed inside, his eyes flicking down to her outfit for as long as he dared in such a public place. That bloody tie was going to kill him.

After their coats were off, Hermione put her mask over her eyes. She smiled at Roger, flattered by his reaction to her silly costume. He'd certainly never looked at her like that when she'd worn it back at school. "Fasten this for me?" she asked, turning away from him so he could secure her mask.

When he was done, she helped him put his mask on. It was a shame to cover even half of his face, but the masks were required. She looked around to make sure no one was watching and leaned up to brush a quick kiss against his mouth. "When we get home, I think I might need detention," she whispered, blushing slightly at what she was saying.

She pulled back and bit her lip, not sure if he'd enjoy playing this game or not. They'd teased about it after he started teaching a class, but that was different. "I've been a bad girl, Professor," she said as seriously as she could before she smiled and took his hand, leading him into the party area.

It had taken some deft wandwork, but Su had managed to get into her costume without any help. Carefully gathering the manteau around her to avoid dirtying the silk, she Apparated to the Community Centre.

"Now duckie, you are too precious for words," said one of the older ladies dressed as a swan. "Who are you supposed to be?"

"I'm Empress Wu Zetian." At the woman's blank stare, Su clarified, "She was Empress of China during the T'ang dynasty. Around 700 AD." It was an oversimplification, but the woman nodded, smiling.

"Well you look lovely. Do you have a mask, dear?"

With a smile, Su activated the charm on her headdress. A silk scarf obscured her face without affecting her vision. Bidding the swan ladies farewell, Su bought some raffle tickets then wandered through the ballroom, hoping to find someone she recognized.

Congratulations, You're a Raffle Winner! shh_caradoc November 3 2007, 06:09:50 UTC
At 10 o'clock, Caradoc began the raffle drawings. The winning numbered ticket stub was drawn first, then when the winner came to the orchestra stand to collect, the item was brought forth and the donor credited.

Caradoc called the winner of the prize from the Pour House coffee shop, a petite woman in a Chinese costume.

Su was pleasantly surprised to hear one of her numbers called. Her smile faltered a bit when she saw her prize, as she didn't drink coffee, but she could always give it away. And she had bought several raffle tickets; maybe she'd end up with the cruise on the Seine after all. A girl could always hope.

Kingsley couldn't help smiling.

He wasn't really one for crowds, even though he'd certainly had to deal with enough of them as an Auror the past few months. And he definitely wasn't one for parties, but tonight wasn't for work or even to keep his social skills from becoming too rusty. It wasn't even the party that had him smiling. Not exactly. It was his date.

When he asked if Susan would like to go to the masquerade, he wasn't sure she'd agree. He'd been pleased when she said yes. Her only stipulation had been that Kingsley had to sort out their costumes. He readily agreed, knowing that if he didn't, she probably dress up as a farmhand or a turnip. Fanciful was not a term anyone would use to describe Susan Bones ( ... )

She beamed at him. "I was so afraid I'd look like a fool, but this is quite good, I think." She looked down. "I wouldn't mind a skirt like this."

Wrapping her arms around his neck, she felt relaxed and queerly exhilarated. It had been some time since she'd been to anything like a party, not being terribly sociable. "I think this will be very nice," she said firmly, though it was at least partially to reassure herself. It would be, though. It couldn't be anything else with him looking so wonderful and being so good.

"Just don't twirl too much, I didn't think about getting you knickers," Kingsley said softly in her ear before he licked her earlobe and put her down again. Actually, he had considered buying her some pretty knickers for under her costume, but thoughts of wicked, knicker-less, gypsy woman made sure he conveniently forgot.

"There's a raffle with lots of great prizes. I think we should buy a couple tickets. We might get lucky." Inside they turned over their cloaks, one of the elderly women was the lady who gave him the frozen turkeys for fixing her roof that summer. It was only the growing line that let them escape. Kingsley supposed that even a mask wouldn't hide his identity. He was one of the largest men in town and his skin color was a bit of give away.

He grabbed Susan's hand, "What first, do you think?"

She squeezed his hand tightly. "Can we...I mean, would you like to dance?" she asked with a charming smile, tugging him towards the orchestra. Having never been to a club in her life, she wasn't in the least sure about the louder music, but this she thought she could do. And if she couldn't...what on earth would it matter? She couldn't be happier tonight if she were buried in seeds for next year's crops.

Rita had wanted to walk, but Irma had been so incredibly uncomfortable with the idea of taking to the streets in her costume that Rita had agreed to apparate. Rita, of course, wanted to show off - but there would be plenty of time for that when they arrived, she supposed.

She landed with a soft pop on the pavement outside the community centre, smoothing the folds of her dress and waiting for Irma to catch up.

When she appeared, Rita smiled - it really was quite a brilliant costume, and it was going to knock Caradoc's socks off.

"Now," she murmured, "Where do you suppose those men of ours are?"

She chuckled, looking around in search of Caradoc or Ollivander. "Do you think they'll recognise us?"

Irma nervously tugged her cape around her shoulders, feeling quite thankful that the cape hid her posterior. She felt too much on display, in the skin-tight Lycra, but was quite grateful for her mask.

"I have no idea," she murmured. "On either count."

Not knowing what Irma's costume might be, Caradoc had decided to simply go for it and wear something he knew he'd like and looked good in to the masquerade. His costume was one he'd worn in a faculty-student talent show years ago. The Apache beaded shirt and buckskin pants molded to him. Caradoc wasn't particularly vain, but he thought he looked pretty good for a 50-year old man. To complete the effect, he grew out his hair until it fell well past his shoulders and added an eagle feather to his hair. His mask was leather and charmed to fit his face and stay on without ties ( ... )

Irma felt better once she knew that Caradoc was there - not that she'd doubted he would absent himself from such a gathering of the community - and what he was dressed up as. She did feel horribly underdressed compared to some of the costumes and was very thankful that the headpiece did cover the top of her face, and the blush she was certainly sporting. She didn't think she had ever been this exposed in a public gathering.

She winced a bit at the flash, and the thought of the photographic evidence. Irma had the feeling that discussing her costume's suitability with Caradoc would get her nowhere, where these kind of discussions with Caradoc often went. "I feel silly," she complained instead.

Daphne frowned at herself in the mirror turning her head this way and that. She was glad she lived in modern times and not ancient Greece. This hair style had taken her several attempts and a good part of the afternoon to arrange before she had managed to get it to look right. This looked about right though, and if there were any small flaws, then hopefully the head wreath would conceal them.

She tugged lightly at the front of her dress. It felt a bit exposed at the front and shoulders, especially for this late in the year. A good warming charm on her cloak might be in order, she decided and went to the kitchen to see if there might be just one more cup of tea left in the pot while she waited for Tony to pick her up ( ... )

It took Daphne a few seconds to catch her breath when the kiss ended and Tony started playing with the tie on her dress, almost as if wanting to undo the knot at the back. She almost wished he would, masquerade ball and intricate hairstyle be damned...

"I'm glad you like it. It's actually just a transfigured nightgown," she grinned, pulling herself out a not entirely appropriate daydream before it had even started. "Yes, I'm quite ready to go to a ball in my sleepwear. Should I still bring my cloak, though?" she added, as she stepped closer, ready to be apparated away.
