His hair was parted and combed back and he wore glasses to compliment his tweed jacket and stuffy brown corduroys. The tweed jacket that he never wore, but that he knew Hermione loved since that one time he'd worn it to teach his class at the centre on Wednesday nights. Well, this Wednesday there was no class. Strictly speaking.
He cleared his throat and looked over at Hermione as she took off her coat and they headed inside, his eyes flicking down to her outfit for as long as he dared in such a public place. That bloody tie was going to kill him.

When he was done, she helped him put his mask on. It was a shame to cover even half of his face, but the masks were required. She looked around to make sure no one was watching and leaned up to brush a quick kiss against his mouth. "When we get home, I think I might need detention," she whispered, blushing slightly at what she was saying.
She pulled back and bit her lip, not sure if he'd enjoy playing this game or not. They'd teased about it after he started teaching a class, but that was different. "I've been a bad girl, Professor," she said as seriously as she could before she smiled and took his hand, leading him into the party area.

"Now duckie, you are too precious for words," said one of the older ladies dressed as a swan. "Who are you supposed to be?"
"I'm Empress Wu Zetian." At the woman's blank stare, Su clarified, "She was Empress of China during the T'ang dynasty. Around 700 AD." It was an oversimplification, but the woman nodded, smiling.
"Well you look lovely. Do you have a mask, dear?"
With a smile, Su activated the charm on her headdress. A silk scarf obscured her face without affecting her vision. Bidding the swan ladies farewell, Su bought some raffle tickets then wandered through the ballroom, hoping to find someone she recognized.

Caradoc called the winner of the prize from the Pour House coffee shop, a petite woman in a Chinese costume.

He wasn't really one for crowds, even though he'd certainly had to deal with enough of them as an Auror the past few months. And he definitely wasn't one for parties, but tonight wasn't for work or even to keep his social skills from becoming too rusty. It wasn't even the party that had him smiling. Not exactly. It was his date.
When he asked if Susan would like to go to the masquerade, he wasn't sure she'd agree. He'd been pleased when she said yes. Her only stipulation had been that Kingsley had to sort out their costumes. He readily agreed, knowing that if he didn't, she probably dress up as a farmhand or a turnip. Fanciful was not a term anyone would use to describe Susan Bones ( ... )

Wrapping her arms around his neck, she felt relaxed and queerly exhilarated. It had been some time since she'd been to anything like a party, not being terribly sociable. "I think this will be very nice," she said firmly, though it was at least partially to reassure herself. It would be, though. It couldn't be anything else with him looking so wonderful and being so good.

"There's a raffle with lots of great prizes. I think we should buy a couple tickets. We might get lucky." Inside they turned over their cloaks, one of the elderly women was the lady who gave him the frozen turkeys for fixing her roof that summer. It was only the growing line that let them escape. Kingsley supposed that even a mask wouldn't hide his identity. He was one of the largest men in town and his skin color was a bit of give away.
He grabbed Susan's hand, "What first, do you think?"

She landed with a soft pop on the pavement outside the community centre, smoothing the folds of her dress and waiting for Irma to catch up.
When she appeared, Rita smiled - it really was quite a brilliant costume, and it was going to knock Caradoc's socks off.
"Now," she murmured, "Where do you suppose those men of ours are?"
She chuckled, looking around in search of Caradoc or Ollivander. "Do you think they'll recognise us?"
Reply
"I have no idea," she murmured. "On either count."

She winced a bit at the flash, and the thought of the photographic evidence. Irma had the feeling that discussing her costume's suitability with Caradoc would get her nowhere, where these kind of discussions with Caradoc often went. "I feel silly," she complained instead.

She tugged lightly at the front of her dress. It felt a bit exposed at the front and shoulders, especially for this late in the year. A good warming charm on her cloak might be in order, she decided and went to the kitchen to see if there might be just one more cup of tea left in the pot while she waited for Tony to pick her up ( ... )

"I'm glad you like it. It's actually just a transfigured nightgown," she grinned, pulling herself out a not entirely appropriate daydream before it had even started. "Yes, I'm quite ready to go to a ball in my sleepwear. Should I still bring my cloak, though?" she added, as she stepped closer, ready to be apparated away.
