Ernie was determined not to be late. After all, that was the reason he'd been fired from the construction job. He needed the job at Pepe's. As he hurried by the front window, he stopped in his tracks. Kingsley. Sitting at a table. Chatting with Sophia.

What were the odds that Kingsley had merely happened into the same restaurant at which Ernie was working? Fuck. He took a deep breath and forced himself to stay calm and think. He'd forgo his wages from this past weekend if he didn't come to work. But between what he'd saved the last two weeks and the comics he hadn't yet sold, he'd have enough money to leave London. Likely even enough to find someplace cheap to live on the continent. His French was passable; he could get by in Paris.

Pulling his baseball cap lower on his head, Ernie turned and walked in the direction. A block away, he ducked into an alley and Apparated back to his room.

Kingsley made a shushing motion with his finger over his lips as he walked in. Sneaking behind his favorite waitress, who was speaking with the owner, the Auror chuckled as she squeaked when he asked, "What does a man need to do to get a table around here?"

"Mr. Shacklebolt! Where have you been?"

"Sophia, get the man a table, first. Then grill him for details. I'll see to the garlic bread and baked ziti, yes?" The owner scolded her gently.

"Yes, please. Heavy on the cheese, please. I've missed your food." Kingsley replied and followed the waitress to his old table. As he sat down, the photo he'd been passing of Ernie Macmillan fell out of his pocket.

Sophia bent down and picked it up. "Why do you have a picture of Ernie?"
