Eleanor was glad she'd owled Mandy earlier in the week and asked about adopting a pet. It was actually pretty boring living by yourself, and she was afraid if she didn't have something to talk to soon, she was going to start getting into the habit of speaking to herself.
Eleanor hadn't wanted to take a day off from the shop, especially after she'd closed early to go to the apothecary the other afternoon, but Mandy had agreed to meet her on Sunday. Hopefully Zach had filled her in on what happened, because it really didn't get easier the more she had to tell it. She expected questions, people wanted to know if she'd heard anything, stuff like that, and she could deal with that reasonably well. But she couldn't quite say the words 'Ernie left' without her eyes stinging and getting a lump in her throat. Even if she hadn't quite given up on the idea that this was all just temporary.
After lunch (she was trying her best to keep her promise to eat), she made her way across the bridge to the animal shelter. She knew she wanted a cat, because she thought a cat would be more agreeable to being by itself during the day than a dog, but other than that she really had no idea what she was looking for. One that wouldn't be opposed to being held, hopefully. Merlin, if this wasn't just temporary, she was well on her way to becoming the strange spinster with a houseful of cats. Well, it was better than owls, at least.
Opening the door, Eleanor called out a 'hello' and looked around for Mandy. She was feeling slightly nervous, which was just silly, but she was also looking forward to not having to go back home by herself.
