Completion: Complete

Eleanor had been exhausted when she’d arrived home from work. Perhaps it was because the shop had been busier than usual, but she thought the reason was far more likely that the only real sleep she’d gotten had been Monday night. She wasn’t sure if it was all the alcohol she’d had with Zach that day, or the fact that she’d slept somewhere other than her bed, but it obviously hadn’t been enough.

She could barely keep her eyes open as she waited for her dinner to heat in the microwave, and had dozed off halfway through her bowl of soup. Finally she had to ask herself what the heck she was still doing up. Sure it wasn’t quite seven in the evening, but it wasn’t like she had plans, or anything. If her body actually wanted to sleep she should let it do its thing.

Unfortunately, she didn’t wake up peacefully and well rested the next morning as she’d hoped. Instead she was jolted awake when she’d reached out for Ernie and came across nothing but pillow and empty bed. When she’d managed to stop her tears long enough to get a look at the clock, she saw that it wasn’t even ten o’ clock yet.

She didn’t understand why sleeping was so hard. One would think it would be a nice respite. She was miserable all day long, did she really need to lie awake and be miserable all night, as well? Besides, she’d never had this much trouble sleeping after Matt. Then again, they’d never shared a bed with any regularity, and it just plain hadn’t hurt this much when that relationship had ended.

That thought made her sit up straight. She had never actually thought of things with Ernie as well and truly ended. She’d been living with the hope that he would realize he was being an idiot and come home, or that she would find him, tell him he was being an idiot, and make him come home. But what if that never happened? What if it really was over?

She couldn’t lie here all night and think about that. She needed to get some sleep. She wasn’t sure which factor had helped her sleep on Monday, and she wasn’t really in the mood to mess about trying to figure it out. Grabbing her blanket, her pillow, and her alarm clock, Eleanor went downstairs. She’d just drink some wine and sleep on the couch tonight.

After making a bed on the couch, she went to the kitchen for a bottle of wine and a glass. She decided to drink it in the living room so she wouldn’t have to worry about getting back to the couch later.

She’d had one bottle of ale and two glasses of scotch at Zach’s. Three or four glasses of wine ought to do the trick. Eleanor turned on the television for company, and proceeded to drink five glasses. Just to make certain.
