It was a horrible day. There was drizzle, the sky was grey, and Eleanor felt wretched. Yesterday had been useless. Hannah didn't know where Ernie might have been either, but she had been nice enough to help Eleanor look. Unfortunately, Ernie apparently hadn't told anyone he was leaving. Nor had he asked anyone for a place to stay.

Eleanor had a feeling that he was just gone. She probably would have just given up, but Hannah had said she'd help her look again today. She was really being great about all of this. She didn't really know what she'd have done without her. Besides, it was better than sitting home and feeling sorry for herself. Something would come up, she was sure of it. She just hoped that something happened before tomorrow, because she didn't think it would be wise to close the shop for too many days.

She made her way to Hannah's with her head down, one hand shoved in the pocket of her jacket, and the other gripping a cup of coffee from the shop down the road from her house. She hoped no one noticed her. She was most worried about people she knew, because then she might have to explain (and it didn't get easier with retelling). But even strangers could be a nuisance. Some woman at the coffee shop had told her that she really looked like she should go home and go to bed because she was obviously coming down with something. She hadn't bothered to explain that wasn't the reason she looked terrible. Just nodded and smiled, and ordered her coffee.

Fortunately, it was a quiet walk to Hannah's house. Eleanor pulled her hand out of her pocket and knocked on the door.
