The smell of fresh bread baking was better than any coffee could provide, or so Dennis thought, but he'd never developed a taste for coffee. He'd woken in the middle of the night, unable to go back to sleep right away, which was odd, as he usually never had any trouble, that is once he actually fell asleep.
So, deciding to be productive, if he wasn't going to sleep, he started on the bread. Kneading and working with the dough was relaxing and calming, so that by the time it was ready for it's second rise, he was ready for sleep. Sticking the dough covered by a damp towel into the cold box, he went back to bed.
Waking up for the second time, he pulled the dough out, warmed the oven and brushed and flossed his teeth. The flat didn't need cleaning as Dennis did that every night, no matter how late before going to bed. He found it therapeutic as well, and keeping things dust free had it's own advantages.
As the bread baked, he placed bowls, plates, utensils and glasses on the counter, thinking the table and cane chairs he scavenged looked fairly nice, if not quite his taste. Then to work on the stew; blanching fava beans and peas, he got it on it's way, so that it would only need a half hour or so on the stove to finish when everyone was ready to eat. He took a sip of the Belgian Ale he was using in the stew, and then a sip of the broth; much better in the stew he thought. But Gertie had said it was a great beer and Dennis didn't deem himself qualfied to judge, but he did have Harps, Guiness, bottled water, milk and juices to drink as well.
He sipped orange juice himself, while nibbling on Granola and chopping bittersweet chocolate. Butter and chocolate melted, and the brownie batter ready, he couldn't resist taking a swipe, and had to refrain from taking another; mint chocolate brownies cooked or uncooked were hard for him to resist. Realizing it was getting close to 10, he gave the flat one last once over, wishing he had some sort of music player, he'd love to have Ella or Billie on right now. Come to think of it, he should probably ask Katie if there were any ways to charm his dehumidifier and air purifier to work as well. Making the bed, which took all of a minute, as it was simply a flat sheet and a duvet, and fluffing the pillows, he yawned and headed for the bath Giving himself the once over with a razor even though he knew it was not necessary as he was naturally, mostly hairless, he grabbed a quick shower.
He hadn't timed it right though, as he felt the buildings wards shift and as he was hastily drying off and pulling on his favorite, and now laundered pair of jeans (he had to acknowledge to himself this was both for comfort and a bit for Wayne), and faded terra cotta oversized t-shirt that nearly fell off his shoulders, over his wet hair and slightly damp skin, he rushed to open the door, grabbing his wand just to be safe.
