Now that she was settled in the cottage on F Street, Arabella had a lot of time on her hands as well as a lot of money. She was 75 years old and had lived fairly simply most of her adult life so she didn't need a lot. What she did need now, though, was something to help her keep a bit busier. She'd had her eye on the animal shelter across the street; she wanted to adopt some cats and volunteer there but, even more, she wanted to donate some money to help the shelter. She'd not really had much money before, certainly nothing comparable to what she'd earned by selling her house in Little Whinging, and now she was in a position to give time and money to help unfortunate animals.
She was also interested in Harry Potter. She knew he'd killed Voldemort (she was getting used to saying the evil one's name); she'd also heard that Harry had settled in Stoatshead Hill after the war ended. Still, she had a bit of history with Harry that made her think it better to approach one of his friends first rather than send him an owl out of the blue inviting him to tea. Realising she could cover both her interests in one letter, Arabella decided to write to Harry's friend Hermione Granger. She penned a letter on some stationery she'd bought in Exeter and sent it off with her new owl, Royal.
Dear Miss Granger,
I am writing to introduce myself and inquire about two subjects in which, I believe, you have an interest as well. My name is Arabella Figg and I live in the stone cottage across F Street from the animal shelter. My dear friend Caradoc Dearborn told me that he had heard your name in connection with the shelter. I have three specific interests in the shelter. I would like to adopt one or more cats, as well as volunteer there perhaps three hours a day, two or three days a week. I would also like to donate a large sum of money to help with operational expenses. Lest you wonder how I might be able to afford this, I'm an elderly squib and I recently sold my home in Surrey for a comfortable sum, which now allows me the opportunity to support a worthy charity. I hope that you and I might meet sometime soon so we can discuss my donation. I would also like to have a tour of the shelter as I would like to begin volunteering soon.
The second subject is a young man I used to know when he was a boy. I don't assume that he ever spoke of me to you, at least not in a good light, but I was acquainted with Harry Potter while he was growing up in Little Whinging. His aunt and uncle, Vernon and Petunia Dursley, hired me to mind Harry once a year when they took their son out to have fun on his birthday but chose to leave Harry behind at my home. Now the war is over, I feel I ought to explain some things to Harry. I would be most grateful if you could tell me how I might contact him.
Sincerely,
Arabella Doreen Figg
