Ginny let herself out onto her front porch, mindful of her
'houseguest', she quietly closed the door and stopped to catch her hair back in a ponytail, adjusting the funny little box she'd nicked from
Gustav after he made her go through with their bet. She couldn't remember what he called it but it played music into a half circle crown that covered her ears. Ginny wasn't comfortable using muggle things, the years of her father's obsessions had only made her more leery about their unpredictable natures so she steered clear of them as much as possible. Magic she knew. Magic she understood. Funny little muggle things that hiss and yowl at you, she didn't care for in the least.
However, she knew Gustav loved the little box and nicking it for the weekend was a sure way to wipe that Cheshire cat grin off his big German face. Connie had been kind enough to explain the basics of it while the
girls had gotten very merry on cheap wine. Squinting up at the sun now, Ginny sighed and clicked the button on the box, shoving it into her back pocket as the music roared into her ears. Smiling, she turned and set off down the dirt path that lead to Hill Street, adjusting the volume, she began singing along when she recognized one of the songs from the radio.
Life's like a road that you travel on
When there's one day here and the next day gone
Sometimes you bend and sometimes you stand
Sometimes you turn your head to the wind
There's a world outside ev'ry darkened door
Where blues won't haunt you anymore
Where brave are free and lovers soar
Come ride with me to the distant shore
We won't hesitate
Break down the garden's gate
There's not much time left today
Life is a highway
I wanna ride it all night long
If you're going my way
I wanna drive it all night long
Through all these cities and all these towns
It's in my blood and it's all around
I love you now like I loved you then
This is the road and these are the hands
From Mozambique to those Memphis nights
The khyber Pass to Vancouver's lights
She turned right on River Road and sprinted across the bridge and down lower Epilson Street toward South Street, thinking of her conversation with Connie about the 'boys'. Ginny hadn't been as evasive as she normally would be about Adrian, partially due to the fact that he remained her best friend and she'd never been evasive about that - she had never cared what her other friends might think about their odd Gryffindor and Slytherin combination but when Connie gave her 'the look', she'd suddenly felt her mouth go dry. Ginny wasn't the impulsive, flirty little girl she'd been so many years ago and she'd been burned very hard with Jack, taking the full burden of blame for having been foolish enough to let herself be vulnerable.
Knock me down get back up again
You're in my blood
I'm not a lonely man.
There's no load I can't hold
Road so rough this I know
I'll be there when the light comes in
Just tell 'em we're survivors
Gimme gimme gimme gimme yeah
If you're going my way
I wanna drive it all night long
There was a distance between you and I
A misunderstanding once
But now we look in the eye
Turning down F, she continued south, finally feeling the loping relaxation of her run overriding the ache of the magical tattoo on her thigh. A small smile curled on her lips as she continued to sing, remembering the look on Adrian's face when he'd found it. She licked her lips unconsciously, thinking of what she'd told Connie. He's smart, funny, confident, gorgeous and my best mate. Why wouldn't I enjoy that?. She'd dodge the "L" word with a sly deftness that would have impressed Professor Snape and waved dismissively at the suggestion that she might be more inclined than she was letting on. Once bitten, twice shy. Pushing herself harder, Ginny promised herself that she was doing the right thing, not letting her mind linger on it further.
There ain't no load that I can't hold
Road so rough this I know
I'll be there when the light comes in
Just tell 'em we're survivors
Life is a highway
I wanna ride it all night long
If you're going my way
I wanna drive it all night long
She turned right on South and waited for the muggle box to click to the next tune as she brushed the back of her hand across her forehead and eased her pace up a notch.
Never no more, will I be all alone
Never no more, will I be a stay at home
'Cause I've got me somebody
Who makes me happy when I'm blue
