Jeff had been up with the sun, preparing himself to lead. Then he went for a long walk while Cedric slept. (And if he'd slipped his friend a little something in his tea the night before, sleep was what Cedric needed -- sleep on the other side of the painting day so it wasn't hemmed with worried dreams.)
Jeff didn't actually prepare the lodge itself until noon. It had been a rainy day, and Cedric had set drying charms on the land beneath the willow frame and a shielding spell over the nearby firepit for when they brought out the coals that had been burning in Cedric's hearth for four days. But otherwise the rain dripped through leafless trees, and ran in little rivulets through the muddy ground. They would probably want to shower afterwards, so Jeff made sure there was a protected path through the little cottage. Blankets were then thrown over the lodge, the rattles laid inside at each of the four doorways, then the cedar line drawn, not to be crossed until it was time to enter. While Jeff did that, Cedric busied himself making the last of the prayer tie belts that was all they'd wear inside the lodge.
About half an hour before people were to arrive, Cedric helped Jeff carry the coal from his fireplace out to the firepit. Seven coals to catch the tinder there, and seven granite stones waiting to go inside and be heated.
Everything ready, they waited for people to arrive.
