At half-four, Ron shut down the printing press, did some quick cleaning charms on the press room and Disapparated from the shop to his bedroom, where he threw himself in the shower and got rid of the day's grime. He'd had an
interesting conversation with Cedric about Hermione that afternoon, but he put that out of his head for now because he had to get ready quickly for dinner with Mum and Bill. By the time he finished showering and got some clean clothes on, it was almost five o'clock. Muttering more swear words, Ron left the house, clad in a macintosh and carrying an umbrella, and Apparated to Exeter. He liked the Muggle supermarket he'd shopped at and he knew it would have something he could fix quickly. He'd sort of exaggerated when he told his mother and brother that he could cook dinner for them. He could fix a salad, and probably pop some pre-made garlic bread in the oven, but he simply didn't know how to cook anything other than eggs, bacon and sausage. He considered buying a box of "instant mashed potatoes" and some sausages to make bangers and mash, but he was sure his mother would be able to detect that the mash wasn't homemade.
Sighing heavily as he pushed his cart around the supermarket, Ron eventually bought frozen garlic bread, a large head of lettuce, two large juicy tomatoes, a bunch of carrots, a small block of cheddar cheese and a bottle of Italian dressing for the salad. He'd made simple salads; he could do that much. The main course, though, would have to be something easy. He decided on a pre-made pizza crust (two of them, actually), some pre-made pizza sauce, a package of shredded mozzarella cheese and another package containing slices of pepperoni sausage. He also bought a package of bottles of Harp beer. It was almost his birthday and he decided to treat himself.
Apparating back to the house, Ron discovered it was already about 20 minutes of 6 o'clock. With Bill and Mum coming soon, he didn't have much time. It was probably best to assemble the pizzas first; he could make the salad while the pizzas were baking, and he wouldn't put anything into the oven until after his guests arrived. He decided to make one pizza with pepperoni and one with just cheese, in case someone didn't like pepperoni. He'd just put the last piece of pepperoni on when he felt the wards shift as someone approached the house. Wiping his hands, he started toward the front door.
