Summary: Harry takes a breath and writes to all the people he's been avoiding
Completion: Incomplete
Harry had made a start, at least, talking to Ron and Hermione every day since he'd decided not to wallow anymore. Some days were tough to leave his room, but he did it. If he could face down Voldemort, he could say hi to his friends. It wasn't until he heard a fluttering of wings at his windowsill, though, that he realised he was doing the right thing.
He opened the window, absolutely agog, as a magnificent old snowy owl flew majestically in settled on his shoulder. She eyed him critically for a moment, and then began to peck angrily at the crown of his head.
"Ow! HEY!" Harry shouted, ducking, trying to soothing the irate owl on his shoulder. He hadn't seen her in months, since before India. He had been sure she was just one more casualty in the war when she hadn't found her way back to him. "Hedwig, calm down! I'm happy to see you too, as long as you don't draw blood!"
She hooted reproachfully but didn't leave his shoulder. He ruffled her feathers and spoke soothingly to her until she was settled. Later that day, Hedwig still hovering about him like a mother hen, Harry decided that her appearance must be a sign. He needed to get in touch with some of the people he should have owled ages ago. Setting quill to parchment, he began to write. Just quick notes, nothing too overwhelming, but he felt better after finishing them.
"Do you want to rest a bit? Hermione and Ron have owls who can-- OW!" She pecked him once more, and Harry laughed. "You've gotten violent, girl. Here you go." And as soon as she had her first delivery she took off through the open window.
Dear Ginny,
Hi. I didn't really get a chance to say that at Christmas, and I should have said it a lot earlier than now. But there it is: Hi. And even worse, because I can't think of a single more creative thing to say, how are you? I'm crap at writing letters but I wanted to let you know I'm okay, and see how you are and what you're up to.
Harry
Dear Remus,
I've been cleaning my room up and I've come across some letters you've written me over the last couple of months, and the present you sent. I'm a total arse and I should have written to thank you but I was in a place where I didn't even notice, really will say thank you now. The
photos you sent are amazing and they mean so much to me, you have no idea. I'm putting them up on my walls so I can see you all every day. How happy you are, and how close. I hope you're all right now. Maybe we can try to catch up, if you'd like to.
Harry
Dear Hagrid,
How are you? It's been ages since I've heard from you and I should have owled sooner. I hope all is well and that you have some interesting new pets though maybe not flobberworms or blast-ended skrewts. Anyway. Let me know you're all right.
Harry
To Roger Davies,
Hermione says you too have gotten to know each other all right. You and I never had much to do with each other, but she says you're a good guy and that you work construction these days. I wondered if we might talk a bit about that. I want to help.
Sincerely,
Harry Potter
