Dear Lavender,

I haven't seen you in a whole week, not since last Sunday. I've missed you. It feels like a long time. We talked about going out some time soon. If you're not too busy, would some night this week work for you? Let me know.

Ron

Sending the letter off with Keeper, Ron went back to his room and mulled things over. He'd not seen Hermione in more than a week. He ought to check up on her again, try to find her, but it was just a lot easier not to. She obviously didn't want to see him either, so that was a continuing thorn in his side.

On the other hand, his left leg was bothering him a lot less since he visited the hospital and got some potion and salve for it. Seeing Luna again after all those years was a nice surprise. He hoped he would see her again soon; he thought of her as a friend, and right now he could use more friends.

Waiting for Lavender's reply, Ron thought about something he'd learned recently. Hermione had not only moved out, she was hanging about with Blaise Zabini, who was not only a Slytherin but had also been in that stupid Slug Club. Ron's eyes narrowed at the thought of Hermione going away, overnight, with someone like that. He didn't care how rich or well-connected Zabini was; he was a Slytherin, and a very smooth-talking one if he recalled correctly. Why did she go anywhere with him, much less overnight? Then he remembered that Zabini was a business contact; he had a big collection of wizarding books that Hermione was reprinting. That had to be the reason.

Ron gave an inward sigh of relief. He probably should have responded to her note, but he'd not known what to say. Anything he might have written would have just come out wrong. There really was only one way to let her know he was concerned about her, and that was to talk directly to her. But he wasn't ready, and he didn't think she was either.

Thinking about his broken friendship with Hermione was too hard. It was much easier and more pleasant to go out with Lavender. Plus being with Lavender had other benefits, he thought with a grin.
