After a full day of running about Stoatshead Hill to get ready for the Solstice celebrations, Julian Avery had come to philosophical decision.

If there was any truth to the myth of St. Nicholas, the man most certainly had to be magical in order to organise something as chaotic as this Christmas business. And he was very likely a true saint just on principle of not hexing anyone in a fit of madness.

Julian had easier missions with the Dark Lord.

But at least these Christian holidays weren't without their sense of ironic timing. Julian had just stepped out of the shop where he bought enamels for his metalworking, when he caught sight of a familiar figure adorned proudly in traditional clothing and shrouded in a veil of the palest, finest hair he had ever seen.

Lucius Malfoy.

It was like seeing the ghost of Jacob Marley. Bah fucking humbug indeed.

Lucius kept his head high and his eyes straight ahead as he walked down the street. There may have been others out; he wasn't sure - no one could do "cool and indifferent" in quite the way Lucius Malfoy could. Although Draco had been coming along, the last time Lucius had seen him.

Thinking of his son just reminded Lucius of his mission. He needed to find out what had happened, who had turned out to be on whose side, and that meant getting to Ollivander's as soon as possible. He quickened his pace, moving to step around a figure on the sidewalk who was standing completely still. Lucius didn't look in case it turned out he knew the person.

He really shouldn't have been shocked to see the man. After all, Malfoy was resourceful. Julian had also heard rumours of a sighting here and there, either of Lucius or his son. Still, it was an incongruity that he hadn't been prepared for, a reminder of his more insidious past whilst immersed in thoughts of gifts, feasts, family, happy little children and of course, private celebrations in bedchambers. Despite years of honed battle reflexes, however, his instinct was to stand absolutely still ( ... )
