It was late, perhaps so late that it more truly qualified as early, and Thom found her eyelids growing heavy despite herself. They hadn't gotten much sleep the night before, and it was catching up with her now, in the dark quiet of the tense room in which they waited. She fought it as valiantly as she could, but after a moment she knew that unless she let herself shut her eyes for a minute or two, after a little more time her body would not afford her a choice.
A minute might have turned into two, then five, then ten, if she had not distantly realized that Henri was approaching. She opened her eyes as he came closer, mustering a little smile. All was still well, as well as it could be, since they were both still there. Her heart clenched a little; likely he was coming to tell her that it was time for her to go, and as she'd promised, she wouldn't argue. But it would be nowhere near easy to leave him for what would now certainly be the last time.
