Summary: Rose and Ten are pulled down to a dying planet where they're placed in a compromising position.

"Oi, Rose! Hold that lever down!" the Doctor called from around the console of the TARDIS.

"It's already down!" Rose called back after a glance at the panel.

"Then hold the other one down!"

"S'like déjà vu," Rose muttered as she lurched across to pull the other lever down.

"What?" the Doctor shouted over the din of the TARDIS' alarms.

"Nothing!" Rose grabbed the other lever and tugged it down.

The TARDIS rocked violently and Rose fell back against the railing, just missing the padding.

"Blimey," she gasped.

The floor straightened and Rose hurried over to the Doctor, rubbing her side.

"What's wrong?" she asked.

"Dunno, something's grabbed ahold of us. We're being pulled down."

"To where?"

"No idea." The Doctor grinned as the TARDIS suddenly stopped. He grabbed Rose's arm to steady her as she stumbled. "Let's find out."

And he darted for the door. Rose grinned and hurried after him.

"So, where are we, then?" Rose asked as they stepped outside. She gazed around as she straightened her skirt and pulled down the hem of her shirt.

They appeared to have landed in the middle of a forest. The leaves on the trees were varying shades of brown and orange, and the trees themselves looked rather sickly. What Rose could see of the sky was an apocalyptic reddish-orange.

"Doctor, everything looks... dead," she murmured distastefully.

"Indeed it does," the Doctor replied, holding the sonic screwdriver up to the nearest tree. "If not dead then well on its way."

"Is this a dying planet, then?" Rose asked, watching the Doctor as he continued to sonic the trees.

"Appears to be. But then why-"

A loud crashing all around interrupted the Doctor and Rose jumped.

"I think we're about to meet the natives," the Doctor murmured.

"I have a feeling they may not be friendly," Rose said, warily eyeing the trees.

The sources of the crashing appeared suddenly in the clearing and Rose cried out, surprised.

They were quite ugly, with horns on their heads and huge bumpy bodies. They looked like giant rhinos. Or maybe dinosaurs.

"Who are you?" the biggest one asked, the language translated by the TARDIS. Rose thought she could detect the original sound of their speech; it sounded like a series of grunts.

"I'm the Doctor and this is Rose," said the Doctor.

The creature looked nonplussed, if a rhino could look nonplussed.

"Take the female. Kill the male."

Before either had time to react, Rose was seized from behind. The Doctor whirled, taking a step toward her but he was rebuked.

He turned again. "Hang on then, what's going on? I demand you tell me what's going on here," the Doctor said, his face contorted with anger as he quickly approached the leader.

"Are you her mate?"

The Doctor hesitated, surprised at the question.

"Sorry?"

"Have you mated with this female?"

The Doctor turned to look at Rose, who stared back, wide-eyed, and gave the tiniest shake of his head.

"She's my companion," the Doctor said evasively as he turned to face the leader of these creatures.

"Have you mated?" the leader asked again.

The Doctor paused, the briefest of pauses, as he considered his options. He was almost certain that this was a dying planet and these creatures its sole inhabitants. He suspected they were low in number and probably running out of females and were looking for breeders, species not important. However, he also suspected they did not take females who had mates.

All of this passed through the Doctor's mind very quickly, of course, and after his pause, the Doctor said yes.

The leader eyed him skeptically for a moment, then stepped forward and smelled him, breathing deeply. Then he walked past and over to Rose, who shrank away, and smelled her as well.

"She smells of him, but they have not mated. She is ours. Take her away."

The two creatures holding Rose began to move and she yelled, struggling against them.

"Wait!" the Doctor cried, rushing forward. The leader hit him, sending him sprawling to the ground.

"She is my mate!" the Doctor yelled, getting to his feet and rubbing his jaw. "We just haven't... mated yet!"

The leader held up his hand and the group with Rose stopped.

"Then you will mate, and we will let you go."

The Doctor met Rose's eyes and she stared back, alternately surprised and terrified. There was a flicker of something else that the Doctor couldn't quite place, having never seen it before on Rose's face.

The Doctor was seized as well but kept away from Rose and they were led through the woods. Rose was treated far better than the Doctor, as the creatures who held her were quick to knock away branches and push debris out of her path.

The Doctor wished he could at least look at her, to convey some sort of message, but she was kept far ahead of him.

They finally reached what was apparently the center of this society. Long, low buildings lay surrounding, all built from some sort of gray stone that looked similar to concrete.

They were led through the town, eventually ending up at a building just like all the others, though it was quite a bit smaller.

The door was opened and Rose led inside; minutes later the Doctor was shoved in as well.

"Now you will mate."

"D'you really think your species can successfully breed with her?" the Doctor burst out angrily, turning.

"It can be done."

"It would kill her!" the Doctor yelled, frustrated.

"It can be done," the leader repeated, "and will be unless you prove your claim of her."

"You can't do this," the Doctor said through clenched teeth.

The leader turned and jabbed the butt of his gun into the Doctor's stomach.

"Don't hurt him!" Rose exclaimed suddenly, rushing to the Doctor as he doubled over.

"You can bugger off now," Rose said irritably.

The leader nodded at once and stepped from the room, closing the heavy door behind him.

"Are you all right?" Rose asked.

"Oh," the Doctor gasped, straightening, "nothing I can't handle."

Rose stepped away and the Doctor looked at her, absently rubbing his sore belly. Tears slowly tracked down her cheeks and she sniffled, arms crossed tightly over her chest. She turned away and her gaze fell on the bed attached to the wall. She grimaced and turned toward the Doctor again.

"You don't have to do this," the Doctor said softly. "I can get us out."

"They're not listening to you, they don't even seem to know or care who you are," Rose said, shaking her head. "If we don't, they'll kill you and..." Rose left her sentence unfinished, too horrified by the idea to actually speak it aloud.

"I just don't want you to do anything you don't want to do."

"There it is, though," Rose said, looking pained. "I've wanted... I want to. With you. For so long now I've wanted it. Just never..." Rose burst into fresh tears, pressing a hand to her forehead. "I just never wanted it to be like this."

The Doctor strode forward and pulled Rose to him; they stood quietly for a moment and then Rose took a breath, placing her hands on his chest. She looked up, trying to smile, and the Doctor carefully wiped the remaining tears from her cheeks with his fingers.

Rose moved her hands to the buttons of his suit jacket, unfastening them and pushing the jacket from his slender shoulders. He let it fall and pulled Rose closer.

Rose closed her eyes as she breathed in his scent. She'd hugged him so many times, held him in her arms, but she was noticing so many new things now.

She would've never been able to vocalize her thoughts, not even to the Doctor, but he actually smelled like time. Time and space. So many creatures were able to look at either of them and know they'd traveled through time, but none had ever seemed to smell it.

Rose breathed deeply again and lightly pressed her lips to the Doctor's neck, just below his Adam's apple. Her fingers rose to loosen his tie and she pulled it from around his neck, dropping it on top of his jacket.

The Doctor's hands slipped underneath Rose's shirt, his fingers lightly brushing the skin of her back as he moved his hands up.

Rose's breath caught and she shivered, pressing her forehead to the Doctor's chest momentarily before stepping back and raising her arms to allow him to pull her shirt over her head.

The Doctor dropped the garment to the floor and smoothed Rose's hair back with his hands. She closed her eyes and he kissed her eyelids, his hands now traveling down to her neck, her chest, lingering on her breasts for a moment before moving on to trace the curve of her waist to her hips.

Rose moved her own hands to his shirt, unfastening the buttons and untucking it from his pants. She gazed at his torso, surprised as always at how skinny he was. She could feel the sinewy muscle underneath, though, could feel his strength.

The shirt joined the jacket and tie on the floor and Rose kissed his chest as her hands stroked his lower stomach. She felt his abdominal muscles contract and the response in his pants as she pressed against him. Her fingers moved to the button of his pants and a tiny groan escaped his lips as she lightly brushed the skin lower on his abdomen.

Rose finally unfastened his pants and he let them drop, stepping forward and out of them.

It was his turn to focus on Rose, kissing her neck, moving down her chest to between her breasts. He pushed one of the bra straps down, exposing her breast. He cupped it in his hand and kissed it, relishing the sound of Rose's moan.

He continued this concentration on her chest and his hand made its way down to her thigh, moving his hand up again underneath her skirt. His fingers hooked over the waistband of her panties and he pulled them down.

Rose stepped back, pulling the Doctor with her.

They made it to the bed in just a few steps and Rose sat, pulling the Doctor down and finally kissing his lips.

He responded with an almost frightful intensity, placing his hands on Rose's waist and pushing her back on the bed. He positioned himself over her, lowering himself between her legs.

Rose pulled him down to kiss him again as he entered her and she gasped at the immediate newness of him, the different way he fit her.

It wasn't long before she reached her peak, biting her lip to keep from crying out.

The Doctor soon followed and when it was all over they lay still a moment, both of them breathing heavily.

The Doctor took a moment to gently caress the lines of Rose's face, running his thumb over her bottom lip before kissing her again.

And then they were up and dressing silently, not quite able to look at each other.

The Doctor banged on the door and it was pulled open. Rose and the Doctor stood close together, blinking in the sudden light.

"You have mated?"

Neither of them replied, just stared blankly at the enormous, ugly creature before them.

Once again they were both smelled and the leader nodded.

"Very well. You are free to leave."

They were led back through the woods to the TARDIS and wasted no time in taking off.

It wasn't until they were far from the dying planet that they looked at each other.

"I'm sorry," said the Doctor softly, hands jammed in his pockets.

"Don't," Rose replied quickly. "It's not... I don't blame you. You and I both know there was no other way off that planet."

"I never wanted you to experience regret during our time together."

"I don't regret a single thing I've experienced with you." Rose finally smiled and the Doctor grinned back.

Rose took a breath to speak, opened her mouth, but couldn't quite get the words out and the moment passed, the Doctor turning back to the console to set them on a new course.

It would be months later, on a beach with her heart breaking to pieces inside her chest, that she would finally be able to say what she'd started to say then.

I love you.

And it would be years before she heard the reply she longed for.

I love you too.
