"some noncivilized societies treat old people cruelly"

I like how an Advanced Placement history book will use a term like "old people."

EDIT: I should also mention (as chad reminded me) that it uses the term "booty" to refer to profit from conquest and bluntly stated "he was retarded" when referring to Peter III of Russia.

that really should be an oxymoron^, but you know the parents these days in the ancient history of modern childrearing.
they also love the word 'penetrate' in all its forms.

"there is no question that the course of world history might have been changed dramatically.."

They're only words
and words can't kill me
Well, I can't even spell them

It is the book that seems to love the term "booty," and disregards any euphemism for "retarded."

no euphemism is necessary, historians are tough-minded men who don't waste words.

haha wow.. after receiving that comment i checked some websites to see which it was, and (i only saw 2 or 3 but) all of them said that Ivan was, as you said. This is hilarious cause the book clearly states "In 1761, Peter III, nephew of Peter the Great's youngest daughter, reached the throne. He was retarded, but his wife. . . Catherine. . . took matters in hand."

I LOVE THAT IM LEARNING INACCURATE INFORMATION FROM A SUPPOSEDLY "COLLEGE LEVEL" BOOK!
