Lord’s Cricket Ground, St John’s Wood, London! Mecca for cricket lovers all over the world. Guardian of the the laws and spirit of cricket. Membership of the Marylebone Cricket Club, the famous MCC, restricted to so few. Once you were allowed to wear the famous yellow and red striped tie, you knew you had arrived.
Rupert Giles walked into the bar of The Long Room and nervously fiddled with the knot of his tie, checking it was of the correct size and shape. Fear flooded his body. He couldn’t remember when he had last been so nervous. Demons, vampires, apocalypses, they were nothing to this. He was a member of the MCC! Eighteen years he’d been on the waiting list. But at last he was here at Lord’s for the first Test match against Australia, the old enemy.
One or two heads nodded casually in his direction, accepting his presence. He didn’t buy a drink; he’d once heard of a new member being so apprehensive that he’d drunk three gin and tonics straight down and had slept through the first over!
Giles walked through into The Long Room itself and for a moment paused, his eyes filling with tears as he looked at the chandeliers, the paintings, the portraits, the priceless items under glass. Only a few steps more and he would be passing through the glass doors onto the Terrace itself. He could already see the gleaming emerald grass, the huge oval of the Press Box opposite.
He took a deep breath, savouring every second and then,
“You can’t go in there, Sir. I’m sorry! Members only!”
“I was a soddin’ member once! Now, if you want to see another sunrise, you’ll get out of my way!”
Giles shut his eyes. OK, this was just a nightmare, a bad dream. He’d wake up soon back in his bed, with the lovely day still to come.
“Hey, Rupert! We’ve got a problem….”
