The alley was dark, damp, and in some places slimy; standard for alleyways in this section of the city.
Her gun pointed out in front of her, she followed the man’s trail silently, ready to shoot if need be.
A demon suddenly jumped in front of her, blocking her path. Her mind intent on the goal, it startled her at first, but a thought rang through her head: If you don’t get the Hell out of here, he’ll be gone, and you won’t find him again.
She ducked and dodged a strike from the demon, a pink liquid spraying the brick wall behind her. Firing a few shots at the frustrated demon, one catching it in its right eye, she sidestepped the demon and started running. Not daring to look back, she heard the demon’s wails of anger reverberating against the wet walls of the alley as she left it. She hoped her efforts would slow it down a little; she couldn’t afford to lose the criminal she was trying to tail. He’d made one mistake in a long line of seamless crimes, a mistake he wouldn’t repeat if he got away now. After long moments of tedious searching--with no further demonic cameos--she found a trail of pink liquid leading down another alleyway, where the criminal she’d been looking for was slumped between two beaten up trash cans. Luck is on my side tonight, she thought.
"That...thing...it attacked me..." He mumbled, wincing from the pain from a deep wound on his left arm. Pink liquid and red blood mixed together and ran down his dirty sleeve. Interesting. One bad guy taken down by another, she thought.
He tried to run, but his injury had weakened him, and Kate was easily able to grab hold of his arm. "You have the right to remain silent," she gritted through her teeth as she roughly placed the handcuffs on him.

"You didn’t request backup?" One of the officers asked as she returned to the station with the criminal in her custody.
"Turns out I didn’t need it," she replied. Luck’s all the backup I’ll ever need, she thought, half believing it, half trying to make herself believe it. "As long as it lets me fight for another day, I’m fine," she muttered.
