Hee! Yeah, actually it wasn't you, or even Officer Byrd, it was just this weird "DON'T BLAME ME! IT WAS THEM CHRISTIANS!" In fact, I think it's less about people blaming Christians than it is about passing the blame from themselves that I don't like. Like, we're all pretty culpable unless we do something every day to make sure homophobia doesn't exist in our lives and that's a tough hill to climb. I think finding the people responsible and working with them is healthy. Belligerently passing the buck so you won't look like the bad guy is not.

I am sick of straight people trying to displace the blame onto Christians as though the hatred of homosexuality is ONLY rooted in religion.

But .. but ... I mean I see what you're saying, but the primary objection to gay marriage is religious! I mean it obviously sucks for you and other Christians who aren't for the ban (you weren't, right?) but that's just how it is.

Yeah, and I realize it's roots are Biblical, but nowhere in the Bible does it say you should take any steps against homosexuality other than prayer because we can't save the soul of another person ( ... )

In my view, the people pushing for gay rights continuously make the mistake of attacking the foundation of their opposition (western society in general, Christianity) instead of just hammering away at the issue. I mean, it's just easier to get the majority of the population of the United States to agree that they were wrong on one minor theological point than to get them to throw their entire religion away.

If you convince the church leadership that gay rights are Biblical, then they'll convince their parishioners, and that would be the end of it, frankly.

Man is the one who has put definitions to how we should palpably (umm, it's a word now!) defy homosexuality. We're the ones who decided that "hating the sin" meant "making it as undesirable to live with as possible".Many of the high profile opponents of gay marriage and the gay "lifestyle" are religious fanatics (if we're talking about individuals). There is also institutional opposition within some mainstream churches - specifically the Mormon and Catholic churches, both of which did a lot of organizing in support of Prop 8 - although I suppose there could be an organization called Atheists Against Gay Homosexuals (AAGH ( ... )

"As though the hate hasn't gone viral and hasn't found it's place in mainstream society. Every incarnation of "You're so gay" doesn't have the Jesus stamp of approval."

This is brilliant, particularly that first phrase. Can I use it from time to time?

Really - thank you. I got so angry at the Prop 8 vote result that I raged a bit against the religious machine myself (more or less quietly; as a former believer and almost-full-time agnostic, I have an ambiguous relationship with god when I believe they exist), and this is a much-need reminder that it hurts me as well as the people I rage against to ... well ... rage against them. It's not going to help win anything to hate in response.

Also (warning: self-pimpage from an old broad) I wrote something about this, and sometime when the toxicity of discussion has died down and you think you might be interested, drop over here. I'd be interested in your thoughts.

Yes of course, feel free to borrow from it for any of the discussions. I can't wait to read your thoughts, and I really appreciate your comments here.

Oh, no, don't bother, it was just surprising to me when this popped back in my RSS reader.

My family and friends have always called me "Rebecca" when they actually called me by name that is, but I've been called Becky or Becca before. Even Beck.
