Attention dog owners

I live in a second-floor flat with no outdoor space. Would it be cruel to keep a dog? Bear in mind I will probably move somewhere that has outdoor space within the next year. I am available for walkies several times a day.

Depends what kind of dog. Alsatian? Border collie? Definitely not. Lhasa apso? Yorkshire terrier? Some other breed that likes to be at home and doesn't need a lot of space to run around in all the time? Maybe.

Lots of things to think about though. Would your neighbours complain about the noise? If so, would you care? Who would look after it if you, say, were sent to exotic locales to interview musicians? Will you be a freelancer forever or is it possible you will go back to working in an office?

If you get one can I play with it? I love dogs.

As you can take it for walks and if you have a decent sized field/park nearby I'd say get one.

unless it's a lobotomised toy dog you'll carry around with you at premieres, yes, sadly. It's not just the exercise, they need company and attention. Sorry.

I am fully against apartment dwellers having pets; I am fully against single people having pets. Unless your life is sad and you have no other priorities than caring for this needy, needy thing. I hate to leave it to the detached-home families and poo-oblivious French women, but...

Sorry, but I think it is less than ideal slackhack December 4 2005, 10:52:52 UTC
I'd wait until your circumstances are different. You need to be able to just let the dog out in the middle of the night when it's caught short and they need to be able to lair around a garden. Walking regimented on a lead all the time in the city is no life for a dog. And also, having a dog really is like having a child - you need everything to be as perfect as possible before getting one.
