Settling in...

Feb 28, 2006 14:29

Dr. Rayner opened the case his escort had been kind enough to carry into the office for him, and began unpacking it onto his desk. Laptop was already there, standard issue; he added a few books, a pen and pad of paper, and a stone replica of a statue of Ba'al he'd discovered a few years ago at a dig near Cairo. He frowned, then shifted the books ( Read more... )

RE: Welcome to Atlantis

Greetings!

Please allow me to introduce myself and welcome you to Atlantis. I am the Director of City Systems and Resources. Our department works closely with Engineering and Ancient Technology Research. We cover everything from the desalinization and waste processes to the power systems for our Puddle Jumpers and the Orion. Please feel free to contact our department if anything does not work for you, or fails to work normally after gene therapy/determination testing. My door is always open for questions, and I hope to see you at the welcome dinner tomorrow night. Welcome to Atlantis Colony!

Sincerely,

Rachel MacGregor, Sci.D.

Re: re: Welcome to Atlantis

Dr. MacGregor,

Thank you for your warm welcome - I'm still trying to figure out where everything is, but if I need help, I'm sure I can email you for directions to your office.

There's a dinner? I hadn't heard about that yet. Must be in one of the emails I haven't gotten around to reading yet - certainly know how to make a man feel at home, greeting me with a full inbox like this...

RE: Welcome to Atlantis

Dr. Rayner-

Not a problem. Just ask anyone directions to Lab 4. I'm currently off work until next week due to an accident offworld, but I check my email frequently.

Yes, it's a seperate email. We have a welcoming dinner for each new batch of colleagues after they arrive, that way you can put names with faces and all. Please email kitchen@atlantis.com if you have any known or even suspected allergies. Off-world and loca dishes sometimes have similar reactions to Earth compounds. Oh, and absolutely no citrus allowed in or around the labs.

Re: Welcome to Atlantis

Dr. MacGregor,

I'll be sure to get in touch with you if I need help with anything, then. I hope you recover quickly - I assume you were injured?

Having now caught up on the backlog of email that managed to pile up while I was...well, not even here yet...I do now know about the dinner, and look forward to meeting you and everyone else there. And yes, I had been made aware of the "no citrus" rule. I don't think there's anyone in this galaxy OR the Milky Way that doesn't know about Dr. McKay's allergies.

Dr. Rayner,

I have no idea what the SGC was thinking when they sent you to Atlantis. We don't need Egyptologists. Archeologists, I might grant you, yes. But all the Goa'uld are in the Milky Way galaxy. Not here.

Anyway. Try to be useful.

Re: re: Congratulations, you've joined the Exiles

Dr. McKay,

I think they were thinking you could use someone who knows their way around a dig. My Egyptology background might not be of much use, but I'm sure I'll find something I can do here anyway.

It's been a while since I heard anything about you. I seem to recall something about you being involved in destroying Russia's DHD and almost causing an international incident, but I'm afraid I've been rather out of the loop since then - Area 51's research specialists don't hear much from the main Stargate program. Have you blown up anything bigger since then, or have you been keeping a low profile?

I assure you, I'll find something to do around here. I'm sure there's plenty to be learned in this galaxy...

RE: re: Congratulations, you've joined the Exiles

Dr. Rayner,

I don't see why we need a 'dig' expert but fine.

Hey, that incident with the DHD was so not my fault! You were in Area 51? How's Dr. McGillion? He get anywhere with his research? I didn't get a chance to see him when I was last on Earth. SGC had us busy with debriefing and debriefing and then it was going over personnel files.

Anything bigger? Well...

Anyway. Good. Yes, there's lots to learn. Just try not to die or anything.

Re: re: Contratulations, you've joined the Exiles

Dr. McKay,

You never know what you may run across out here. I read about all the hoops you had to jump through trying to find a ZPM that had been hidden by some Brotherhood, I could have gotten that figured out much quicker (and possibly actually brought the ZPM back to Atlantis).

Dr. McGillion? He was one of the physicists, wasn't he? Naquada research or something? I'm afraid that wasn't my field, I don't know much more than that he's still there.

Well? What kind of answer is "well"? Either you have or you haven't, and either way I'm fine with not knowing. It's not as if I even know you.

I do give not dying a rather high priority. Almost as high as finding the tomb of Nefertiti.

Chuck carried in another crate, and set it on the floor. "That's the last of your things, Dr. Rayner. Is there anything else I can help you with? I've got a bit of free time left before my next shift."

He opened the crate, just enough to make sure it was the right one and nothing was visibly broken. "Yes, thank you, ahm...sergeant?"

He thought for a moment. "Well, I've found my quarters and my office...I don't suppose you could show me where I might find a bite to eat around here?"

"Yeah, sure, was about to head down to the mess hall myself, if you didn't need anything else. This way." He gestured towards the door, leading the way. "I'm Sergeant Lenoir. Most people just call me Chuck."

He stopped to lock the crate again and log off of the laptop before he followed...Chuck. "Dare I ask what the food is like around here?"

RE: Need something to do?

So who'd you piss off? It must have been something big for them to have come up with a workable excuse to send us an egyptologist.

The annoying brats on the mainland I'm generously helping to develop vaccines for keep giving me really bad sketches of equally bad cave paintings. Would you like me to send you some of those? It's probably at about the right level with the rest of your work.

Welcome to Atlantis, try not to break anything.

Re: re: Need something to do?

Dr. Kavanagh,

I do generally try not to get on people's bad sides. I have no idea why I ended up here - although, now that you mention it, Dr. Jackson and I haven't exactly gotten along in recent years.

There are cave paintings on the mainland? That sounds fascinating! I would love to see any sketches of them you have - children's drawings will have to suffice until I can get out there and see them myself. I don't suppose there are any sarcophagi? Writings? Anything that might possibly be somewhere in my field? Although of course, if you define my field as "really old stuff" as so many people seem to, everything here falls into it, just about.

Oh, please. In all my time with the Stargate program, I have yet to break anything I wasn't supposed to.

Subject: THe mainland.

Good day:) I was told that you would be interested in going to the mainland and some of the other planets. I would be happy to guide you or Teyla. Or you can talk to our people living on the mainland. My father will be pleased to make you feel welcome.

Jinto,

I think I need a bit to get settled in before I start contemplating trips offworld, or even to the mainland, but thank you for the offer. I do look forward to getting to know this galaxy and its history.
