My novel The Last Damned Vampire was rejected -- albeit kindly -- by the agent who read it. It was an extremely nice rejection (he said he might have taken it 12 years ago when he was hungrier), but nevertheless it was rejected ( Read more... )

I'll take a kind rejection (or even a mean one) with comments over a form rejection any day. My thing is to ship the thing out right away once I get it back--unless I get a rewrite request or a comment that really resonates with me. In that case, I do the rewrite. Otherwise? It's not doing my any good moldering away on my hard drive. The procedure is probably different with a novel than short stories, though; my (published) Mom has a bunch of queries out to agents right now, whereas all my stuff is out at single editors.

Your vampire book sounds awesome, and I can't wait for the news that some smart publisher has picked it up. :) And it's good to see you back on LJ.

Sorry for the setback, Steve, but it seems that you have everything well in hand with this, certainly better than I would! I wish you nothing but the best of luck til you find the right agent and then publisher. I've known you too long to think you'll do anything but that which is positive here!
