I've been remiss in posting here lately, even though I've been doing an unsually large amount of stuff that I could write about. As I mentioned a couple posts back, there were a lot of events recently. Just since the beginning of May I heard Jorge Cham of PhD Comics speak on campus, saw a screening of the documentary Helvetica, judged at the Read more... )

Uh.

Jorge is a friend of mine. We started a brief, ill-fated comics club my senior year of Stanford. He's a cool guy, and I'm super stoked he's living off PhD now - at least he was when I ran into him at Comic Con last year.

He said he's basically living off it, yeah. I got the impression that the speaking gigs in particular are a significant portion of his income. If only I'd known you knew him, I could have had something unique to say to him and gotten a cameo in the "wrapup" strip he eventually draws about his Ohio visit!

He probably knew that I illegally downloaded the whole "Eyes of Nye" series from a documentaries-only BitTorrent tracker as soon as I found out the show even existed. I'd just watched the nuclear energy episode the day before. (He re-used some of his jokes from the series during his talk.)

Yeah that could do it. Never heard of the series before today, but from the wikipedia article it sounds pretty cool. $499 for a legitimate copy, though. Wow. Maybe I'll just take a quick peek on some torrent servers later tonight.*

While I'm on the subject of torrented science shows, try finding The Secret Life of Machines. Had 3 seasons I know about. Good stuff.
