I was on my own again for SIFF press screenings; "J" had a conflicting activity during the day. I had a mad rush to make it to the first film - in spite of being ambivalent about whether I wanted to see it - but I made it with four minutes to spare, again parking halfway up the hill rather than the lot that was restricted
yesterday.
The 10 am film, Heal the Living, was a French-Belgian ensemble drama about a family and a car crash, a handful of medical people, and an unhealthy musician with two sons. It was good.
The noon film, Two Irenes, was a Brazilian film about two 13-year-old girls who became best friends. I figured out the big reveal before I dozed off, and upon later research discovered that it was also revealed in some capsule reviews anyway. I was bored for the portion of the film before I dozed off, and conversation with others suggests that I may have been bored for the rest of it if I hadn't been drowsy.
The 2 pm film, Goldstone, sounded good from the description: an indigenous Australian detective goes to a gold mining town to investigate the disappearance of a Chinese migrant worker. It was very good.
At the end of the day, I had an inspiration to write three word reviews of each of today's films:
Heal the Living - surprisingly not depressing.
Two Irenes - I fell asleep.
Goldstone - surpassed optimistic expectations.
