"Hey. Can I have some of those?"
Mark looks up when he hears that voice directed at him. Oh no, this wasn't happening again. Last time it was an arm around him. Now he was sitting right next to him, hip-to-hip. And if Stephen turned his face a certain way, he almost looked like... no, don't think about it. Don't think about Greg. Shit. This was not the time, and certainly not the place.
"Ok, I get it. You really like your sunflower seeds."
"What? Oh, no. I mean yes, you can have some."
Mark holds out the bag of seeds and watches as Stephen grabs a handful and tosses them into his mouth. Mark vowed after what happened with Greg to not fall for another guy. They were good for one night stands, maybe, but not for the long-term. Men, especially male athletes, should only be in serious relationships with women. That's what Mark told himself, anyway.
"Why is baseball associated with sunflower seeds, anyway?"
Mark is brought out of his thoughts by the sound of Stephen's voice. Did he really not know this?
"It's just another healthy alternative to chewing tobacco, besides gum," Mark answers him.
"Oh, right. Well why do we always have to be chewing something?"
"I guess it's just to calm the nerves. Keep us from getting a premature heart attack, what with how stressful baseball is."
"You know, you really are a smart guy," Stephen says. He has that silly grin on his face. Again.
"Not always," Mark mumbles to himself. If he was smart, he would have never had a sexual encounter with his best friend. If he was smart he'd be able to put it in the past and move on.
"What was that?"
"Nothing. Forget about it."
"Alright. Well I guess I should get ready for my at-bat," Stephen says.
In a moment he's up and gone just like before, and Mark is left alone again with only his thoughts.
